a tough day
The Goderich Midgets had a tough day
at an OMHA hockey tournament m
Petrolia on Dec. 26. The local team, com-
peting in the A division, lost games to
Essex 7-1 and Paris 8-2.
In their first game, Goderich struck for
the first goal, as George Sideris netted the
puck on a play assisted by Mike Beange at
the two minute mark of the first period.
However Essex came roaring back and
dumped three counters by Goderich
goaltender Tom Durnin before the first
frame period ended.
In period two, Goderich was outshot 20-1
as they yielded four goals. Period three
also belonged to the Essex squad, as they
peppered Durnin with 18 shots while
Goderich fired only two at the opposing
net. However, despite the lopsided shot
count, the period was scoreless.
Durnin, who faced 48 shots in the contest
was named Game MVP.
Durnin split the goaltending duties with
Shawn Currie in the Paris game, but
nether netminder could stop enough pucks
to prevent the 8-2 romp.
Goderich got two goals from Colin
roomfield, with Brian Wight assisting on
oth tallies.
Goderich Miffgets had little better luck
n recent Shamrock League action, losing
to the home side in Thamesford, 5-3 at
ome to Strathroy and dropping a 6-3 deci-
ion on the road to Dorchester.

oderich got goals from Mike Radford,
ill Whitstone, Scott Glen, Mike Rompf,

Sailors win two in a row
BY T.D.
"There will probably be a lot of curious
hockey fans turn out Sunday to watch the
Goderich Sailors play the Mount Forest
Patriots. The gane, at 3 p.m., will be the
first at home for the OHA Junior 'C'
Sailors since December 6. Since then, the
Sailors have played five away games.
Their extended road trip started like the
rest of the first half of the schedule had
gone with losses, by respectable scores,
but still losses. However, in their last two
games, the Sailors seem to have found the
secret of winning.
The Sailors followed up last week's sur-
prising 11-5 victory over the previously
undefeated Hanover Barons with a 9-7 vic-
tory i over the third place Wingham
Ironmen Sunday in Wingham. No doubt
local fans will want to see for themselves
what has transformed their team into the
holders of a genuine two -game winning
streak, quite a feat for a team which has
found winning difficulx since joining the

Mother carries the torch
Former Goderich resident, Marilyn
Bucholtz (nee Wightman) carried the
Olympic Torch and her three week old
daughter Krista.
She carried the Olympic Torch on day 33
of the relay—December 19—near Belville
Ont.
Baby Krista was born 11 days early.
Before then, Bucholtz, 28, was not sure if
she would be making the run in a wheel
chair.
She had intended on carrying Krista the
whole one kilometer, but because of in-
surance reasons, Petro Canada, the of-
ficial sponsor, asked her to just hold the
baby when she received the torch.
Bucholtz who lives in Cherry Valley and
works at
Bucholtz,
Region Conservation
Authority, did not even know she was preg-
nant when she filled out the 50 applications
and dropped them off at local gas stations.
Bucholtz was originally from Goderich
and attended GDCI. She married Don
Bucholtz in May 1984. Krista is their first
child.
To prepare for the run, she walked in the
country near her home earring a three
pound flashlight above her head. She was
a bit concerned about carrying the torth
for so long and that maybe she had not
trained long enough, but when the day ar-
rived she was prepared.
She plans to pass on her Olympic
uniform to Krista when she gets a little
older.
Goderich residents, Judy Watt, Tanya
McCuspey and David Hollingworth will be
carrying the Olympic Torch next week.
Watt and McCuspey will be running on
January 3. Watt runs at 7:30 at the in-
tersection of Highways seven and 21 and
McCuspey runs at 3:30 p.m. two
kilometers North of Mount Bridges on
Highway 81 South.
Hollingworth runs January 4 at 1:39 p.m.
starting at the Petro -Canada Station in
Woodstock on Highway 59.
Junior C league two seasons ago.
What has happened is simply the coming
together of a young team that has been
working hard and is now beginning to
believe in itself. The patience shown by
coaches Kent Phibbs and Dick Madge is
now paying off as some of the young
Sailors gain confidence and things begin to
click.
Sunday in Wingham was a good exam-
ple. Byron Bowman, in his first full season
with the Sailors after playing midget last
year, scored two goals and had two assists
and Tommy Bean, who also played midget
last year, had two goals and an assist.
Todd Graham also chipped in with a pair
and Derek Jefferson, Mark Cauchi and
defenceman Ron McKay got singles.
McKay has just joined the team and has
been impressive so far. He had been play-
ing with the Clinton Mustangs Junior 'D'
team which folded two weeks ago.
Shawn Larder. had two assists and Dar-
rell Durnin and goalies Jeff Roy had .one
each. Roy's assist came on the Sailors last
goal, an empty-netter fired the length of
the ice by Derek Jefferson. Roy's real con-
tribution, though, was his outstanding
game in goal for the Sailors.
The Sailors started strong Sunday
outscoring Wingham 3-1 in the first period
but the Ironmen turned the tables on the
team in the second. The Sailors won it in a
wild third period when they outscored
Wingham 5-3.
The Sailors captain Tom Bean was
chosen as the game's first star.
The Ironmen got' goals from Jason
Goodall, Sandy McDonald, Doug
McFarlen, Brad Priestap, Scott Hackett,
Bevin Flett and. Paul Brophy.
Referee Rick Jacklin assessed a total of
54 minutes in penalties to the Ironmen and
49 minutes to the Sailors, in the hard-
hitting contest. The Sailors' Chris Sideris
showed good discipline in taking only a two
minute minor for roughing while the
Ironmen's Dan Gilchrist took five minutes
for fighting and two minors, one as the in-
stigator in the same incident.
