I wrote about some issues that took place
at Maitland Manor a couple of weeks ago,
about how involved the workers get,
especially with some of the residents that
have been there for a long time. Nettie
Winters, from the Wingham area came to
the Manor in August 1967, she was a special
resident. After administrator, Maureen
Chilton made the rounds to the residents to
distribute Christmas gifts with Santa
recently, and later finding Nettie had pass-
ed away, it touched the hearts of many at
the home. Maureen thought a lot about Net-
tie when she went home and they would like
to share her story as a tribute to Nettie
Winters.
Nettie's Christmas
•
Nettie was an old woman; she was in her
87th year. Nettie had been at the Nursing
Home almost since it opened more than 20
years ago. Before coming to the Home she
had been in other institutions for many
years. You see, when Nettie was a very
young woman, she lost her husband and her
son, Michael, both of whom she loved very
much, in an accident. Nettie never got over
her loss and never stopped grieving.

PEOPLE IN
OUR TOWN
Betty Helesir, 524-9265
In all the years that I have known Nettie I
have never heard her complain. Oh yps, she
would cry out in pain now and again, but
never a complaint. While she was still able,
Nettie spent her time in the laundry depart-
ment, never missing a day. When the time
came that Nettie was no longer able to get
around, we gave her soft cuddly dolls to help
her pass the time. Nettie loved those dolls!
She cuddled and kissed and petted them and
always called them Michael.
Nettie continued to fail. It was nearing
Christmas and we knew she didn't have long
to live. On the Friday before Christmas we
held our annual Christmas party for the 91
residents living in the Home. All those who
were able gathered in the dining room
where Santa came to distribute gifts to
everyone. When Santa had finished giving
gifts to all those present, we refilled his sack
with the gifts for those in bed who were too
ill or frail to come to the party.
Nettie was one of those. When Santa and I
got to Nettie's bed we knew she didn't have
long to live. Santa bent low over Nettie and
held her hands. He said "Hello Nettie dear,
it's Santa come to see you. I have a gift for
you Nettie and I want to wish you a Merry
Christmas. You rest now Nettie." Nettie
clutched her present as we quietly left the
room.
After we had finished our visits to all the
other residents confined to their beds, Santa
and I returned to the dining room from
where we had started. A nurse approached
to tell us Nettie had just died holding her
gift. The gift from Santa was a brand new
dress. Nettie was buried the following Mon-
day wearing her Christmas dress.
The last person Nettie saw on this earth
was Santa wishing her a Merry Christmas. I
know it will be a good Christmas, Nettie,
because it will be the first time in many,
many years that you will spend Christmas
with your family, the husband and son you
loved so very much.
Merry Christmas Nettie! (by M. Chilton).

Christmas has come and gone for another
year, it is always such a joyous occasion.
Everyone is in good spirits, meeting old and
new friends, visiting with relatives and
families. The special services at this time of
year seems to fill the churches and bring
people closer together. Our children travel
from afar to fill our homes with joy and
thanksgiving. It is wonderful watching the
grandchildren so full of hope and expecta-
tion. How nice it would be to have this feel-
ing of love and giving last throughout the
year. May the many blessings you have
received this holiday season remain in your
hearts, so that each one of us can go into the
new year with love and respect for others
and more compassion for those who are less
fortunate. May you all have a healthy, hap-
py and prosperous year.
