PEOPLE IN
OUR TOWN
Betty Helesic, 524-9265
The Huron Tract Spinners and Weavers
Guild had their Christmas potluck dinner to
wind up their year recently at Gerry Zur-
briggs. They also elected their new ex-
ecutive for 1988. It was reported that the an-
nual sale and exhibition held at the River
Mill in Benmiller was the most successful
one to date.

Some Archives were donated to the Huron
County Pioneer Museum by the Huron Coun-
ty Historical Society and moved there in
January 1987.
The Society has also been able to give
some financial assistance to the Museum
Archives and Research Departments
through a bequest from the late Elizabeth
Osbaldeston, a former native of Goderich
Township.
During the past year the Society's general
meetings have been held- in Nile, Exeter
Town Hall, Mount Carmel and Brucefield.
Mrs. Dorothy Duncan, Executive Director
of the Ontario Historical Society and Gover-
nor of Ontario was the guest speaker at the
last meeting.
They also sponsor an annual historical
models competition in all elementary and
separate schools within the county. In-
cluding the Junior and Senior categories,
$268.50 was paid out in prizes in 1987.
An annual year book is published by the
Society, this year Volume 23 was produced.
The copies of the Historical booklet are
available from the secretary -treasurer,
Mrs. M. Batkin of Clinton, at a minimal
cost.
The Huron County Historical Society has
three new projects in the plans for 1988.
Their first, is to make up an historical
packet on the early history of the county to
be used in elementary and separate schools
in Huron. Secondly, is taping the facts of
early history from the older citizens of the
county. Their -Ili d project is to produce an
historical map o Huron County.
We executive f the society is a dedicated
and'inspiratio 'group' of people working
together to pr erve the history of the coun-
ty, under the lea ership of Keith Roulston.
Keith will hold the leadership for three
years, 1987-1990.
The Society would welcome any new
members who might be interested in thb
history of Huron. The membership fee is on-
ly $5.00, and this entitles them to the annual
publication booklet and two newsletters that
are sent out to all members. If interested in
joining this group, give Mrs. M. Batkin of
Clinton a call, she will be glad to hear from
you. •
The Goderich Shoppers' Square Associa-
tion has a membership of about 82, with
Ross McDaniels managing the group. They
have three big promotions each year. The
first in May, which is the Midnight Madness
sale; in July, they promote the Sidewalk
sale and in November, the Pre -Christmas
sale. They work together supporting many
of the uptown functions, such as Festival of
Lights, Festival of Arts, and the Tiger
Dunlop Days. This is all done to encourage
traffic and business to the uptown area. The
group also work closely with the Goderich
Business Improvement Association, who
were responsible for the new look around
the square of the sidewalks, trees and flower
boxes, within the last few years.
The Lioness Club of Goderich is in its
fourth year of operation. This year, Dorothy
Bogie is the president. Dorothy says one of
their main projects this year has been the
Diabetic Drop-in Centre.
The Lioness Club have made donations to
Children's organizations, such as the Figure
skaters and Ringette, the Lady Di Nursery
School, North -Huron Big Brothers, Lions
Canine Vision School, the Lions Drug
Awareness Program as well as the local.
drug program so far this year. They also
donated a Re-Scussi Baby to the hospital
last year.
Tuesday night the Club will be initiating
four new members into their group, making
a total membership of 32 active members.
Two very successful events the Lioness
Club have had this fall were the annual fall
dinner and a fashion show.
A diabetic mail campaign that started
Nov. 1 is still going on, sponsored by the
Lioness Club.
Dec. 21, the Christmas meeting of the
Diabetic Drop-in Centre will be held with
guest speaker Grant Ellison.
