(photo contributed) Take extra precautions in driving Taking a few extra precautions will make driving this winter safer and more pleasurable, Ontario Minister of Transpor- tation Ed Fulton said today. "With shorter days and longer nights, it's important to remember that Ontario law requires your car headlights be on one- half hour before sunset and until one-half hour after sunrise," said Fulton. "Local newspapers and radio stations list the on and off times for vehicle lights. "As this is National Safe Driving Week, I would also strongly urge all drivers to wear their seat belts every time they get behind the wheel of their vehicles." With snowplows and other winter maintenance equipment now operating on many highways, drivers should be addi- tionally cautious, Fulton added. "When you see the flashing blue light, reduce your speed and give the snowplow lots of room," he said. "These extra -wide, slow-moving vehicles often travel in tandem on the highway, so never try to pass between them. "There isn't enough room and the ridge of snow they toss out could throw your vehicle out of control." Carrying a motoring kit in your car trunk is also a good idea, said the minister. "The kit should include an ice scraper, shovel, booster cables, flares, blankets and a first aid kit," said Fulton. "And be sure your car is properly tuned and has the correct tires and fluid levels. "Finally, be - extra cautious of other drivers, and watch for hazards like ice pat- ches and debris on the road," he conclud- ed. "If every driver in this province makes safe driving a habit, we could see a dramatic reduction in road deaths this winter." More than 10,000 Lions members will assist in Olympic Torch Relay Alberta Judge Brian Stevenson, Lions Clubs International President, announced that more than 10,000 Lions members from hundreds of communities across Canada will assist in the Olympic Torch Relay, which .gets underway in St. John's, New- foundland on November 17, 1987, and will end in Calgary on February 13, 1988. Lions will assist Petro -Canada in coor- dinating the 6,500 official torch bearers duringthe largest public event in Cana- dian history. Lions will ensure that all torch bearers will be in the right place at the right time as the relay passes through 700 communities during the 89 -day event. The Lions will also help coordinate Olympic Torch Relay community events across the country and raise money for amateur sports through the sale of Olym- pic Torch souvenir candles and lapel pins. "I expect we will raise more than two million dollars to support amateur sports in every part of this country," said Judge Stevenson. The Lions President compared the Olympic Torch Relay to other Lions com- munity projects such as drug abuse prevention, homes for the deaf, diabetes research and guide dog training for the blind, noting that the Lions become a rally- ing point for their communities. Judge Stevenson challenged all Canadians to become involved in the Olympic Torch Relay events. The Lions Foundation of Canada has ex- clusive marketing rights to the Olympic Torch Relay souvenir candles and lapel pins. All money raised through the sale of these souvenirs will help support amateur Olympic -type sports in the communities where they are sold. There are three elements to the Lions Clubs' role in the Olympic Torch Relay.
