selected
for funding
The Ministry of Education has allocated
$600,000 to fund projects aimed at reducing
the dropout rate in Ontario Schools,
Education Minister Chris Ward announced
recently.
Agriculture and Food Minister Jack Rid-
dell said that a project of the Huron County
Board of Education had been selected.
The project is a rural school board plan to
meet strong links with CEIC, CAAT,
Futures, social agencies, local business
and industry ; and alternative programs in
secondary school that include continuous
intake, individualized program and
development of learning materials.
The 12 projects, which were selected
from a total of 75 submissions, will be
published and circulated to school boards
across Ontario.,
Projects selected contain:
Dropout prevention programs for
students at risk, including visible
minorities and Native people; re-entry
programs for those who have already left
school; and counselling programs focuss-
ing on career planning and transition to
the work place.
"We believe that the intervention
strategies contained m the pilot projects
will assist Ontario school boards in
significantly lowering the dropout rate
across the province," Ward said.
He added that the new initiative coupled
with two additional broad-based undertak-
ings, the Ties to Business and Industry In-
centive Fund and co-operative education,
are striving to create a varied and respon-
sive educational system m Ontario that is
equally relevant to the student pursuing
postsecondary education or the student
embarking on another career path.
"We believe that initiatives such as
these stimulate students' interest m school
by increasing their desire to complete
their studies, " Ward said.
Ward said that he was looking forward to
releasing the work of George Radwanski.
In March of this year, Radwanski was ap-
pointed to unearth ways of making On-
tario's education system more relevant to
the needs of young people and to the
realities of the market.
"I am confident that the work of our Stu-
dent Retention and Transition Pilot Pro-
jects, coupled with our other endeavours in
conjunction with Radwanski's report, will
enable us to construct solid and useful
strategies to reduce the dropout rate from
our schools," he said.

Elevators has successful year
Goderich Elevators Limited President
George Parson) said the company ex-
perienced an average year of shipping and
handling, but we which saw a pattern
change in the mx of grains handled.
"Goderich El:vators serves two func-
tions," he said "We bring in Western
grain and truck t out to milling operations
within a radius of 100 kilometres of the
port. Secondly, vestore Ontario wheat for
shipment oversea"
While the tot' handling of grain was
comparable to hsfyear's volume, Ontario
wheat volume wad down about 60,000 tons
because of wedler and other crop dif-
ficulties. While to red wheat crop in On-
tario did not maeTialize in quantity, it did
reach its objectkein quality and Goderich
Elevators belieteit was well received by
the milling indurty.
"We fortunablt had an increase of
Western wheat ail this balanced out total
volume for the year," Parsons said.
The total corr forage in Goderieh and
Port Colborne is expected to equal or
',slightly exceed last year. In addition, both
the Goderich and Port Colborne operations
will load corn vessels for movement out of
Ontario. In November, Goderich
Elevators completed loading the Selkirk
Settler with 13,000 metric tonnes of corn.
"The marine engineer strike, in Oc-
tober, had no effect on ships docked at or
coming into Goderich," Parsons said.
Goderieh Elevators Limited's con-
solidated net income for 1987 was $524,265
($1.56 per share). About $90,000 was ex-
pended in capital outlays. The company
continues to bring cost saving measures,
in administration and labour, into effect.
Concerning shipping and free trade,
Parsons said, "I don't think that changes
in shipping regulations under the agree-
ment will have much, if any, effect on ship-
ping operations in Goderich. At any rate,
we will have to wait awhile because the full
impact of any changes won't be seen until
a few years down the road."
