While she expressed her feelings on sportsmanship through a great many more paragraphs in her col- umn, it was her summation which should be internalized. As she sat in the stands watching the game which she found so upsetting, it is amazing that she didn't ask herself why there were so few, if any, wives and spec- tators in attendance. The answer, of course, is that is was only an insignificant LET TL RS game. We doubt very much if either team went home to their families expressing great ecstasy in victory, or agony in defeat. Perhaps as we write this letter and take one foot out of mouth only to be replaced by the other in a "can't win" (who cares) situation, one thought remains a source of concern. That the Signal Star would allow an employee to use the media as a tool to express personal frustration. In closing, we would like to thank Ms. DeBruyn for the publicity she has give our league and express the. hemp that this letter ` does not trigger further insignificant print on a relatively insignificant subject (ex- cept to the men who play in the league). As well, we would urge Ms. DeBruyn in the future to approach the executive of the league personally with suggestions as to how we might improve our league. The Executive, Goderich Men's Industrial Basketball League. Women's health centres not abortion clinics Dear Editor: I feel it is important to Clarify the situa- tion regarding the recent annotfncement by my colingue Minister of Health Elinor Caplan of the first of a series of regional women's health centres being established at Women's College Hospital in Toronto. From the types of comments I have been receiving, it has become apparent that many people are under the mistaken im- pression that these centres will actually be "abortion clinics". This is definitely not the case. This centre, and those which will follow in other areas of the province, will provide a wide range of education, counselling and referral services to women. These will in- clude family planning and birth control, in- fertility counselling, pre-menstrual syn- drome and menopause education and sup- port, counselling on alternatives to abortion, and referral for women seeking therapeutic abortions. Free standing abortion clinics remain il- legal under the federal criminal code, and neither myself nor the government of which I am a part support the operating of these "free standing" clinics. Abortions will con- tinue to be performed only in accredited hospitals, following the approval of therapeutic abortion committees, as is the case now. The centres will provide only pre - and post -abortion counselling, as well as providing a referral service to those seeking abortions, advising them of which hospitals do perform this service. It is my hope that provision of better counselling services in the centres will help to minimize the number of unwanted pregnancies by enhancing awareness of birth control while at the same time ensur- ing that women have access to the services they need. Yours very truly, Jack Riddell, MPP - Huron, Minister of Agriculture and Food. Keeping the `Christ' in Christmas Dear Editor: What is Christmas? To many people, it is a time of the year when the sidewalks are bustling with busy shoppers, stores are lit up and decorated with brightly -colored ornaments. It is a time for exchanging cards and gifts, Santa Claus and toys. It is a time when friendsand relatives we seldom see drop in unexpectedly for a drink, gaily decorated fir trees and par- . ties. For some an extra day that they have to go to church. Is this what Christmas is all about? This is commercialism. A time to buy and sell, to eat, drink and party, but it does not reflect the true meaning of Christmas. Two thousand years ago in the little village of Bethlehem, a child was born in a stable to a virgin maid. Christmas is a time to celebrate this blessed event. The birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Christmas is a time of sharing with our family and friends, a time to show our love. This need not be done with expensive gifts or drunken parties, but by giving ourselves in fellowship and being together as a family. This is the true meaning, of Christmas. Therefore, let us keep the Christ in Christmas by sharing our love with each other as he did.
