The Goderich Sailors lost two games at
home last weekend. The Sailors were
defeated 5-3 Friday by the Winghaitn
Ironmen and then were blown out of the
water 9-2 by the Port Elgin Bears on
Sunday .
The losses sink the Sailors even deeper
into the last place in the OHA Junior "C"
Group 2 standings and were particularly
disappointing coming just when it ap-
peared as though things were corning
together for the Sailors. In their previous
three games they had a win and a tie and
had played well in a losing effort in
Hanover.
The weekend losses, however, were
anyttung but encouraging. The Saildrs put
up a lacklustre effort against the Ironmen
and followed that with a poor first period
Sunday against Port Elgin. They began ti)
put forth some effort in the second period
and got back into the game, but then in the
third period they lost their composure and
forgot about the game, deciding instead to
engage in a running debate with referee
Pete Chisholm about the quality of his
work. There was no doubt that Chisholm
had lost control of the game, but the
'Sailors had only themselves to blame for
the five unanswered goals by the Bears
that turned the game into a rout.
Following the game, Sailors coach Kent
Phibbs blasted his players for their lack of
self-discipline on the ice. In all, the Sailors
had 22 minor penalties, seven 10 minute
misconducts and four game misconduct
penalties. The Bears had 18 minors, one 10
minute misconduct and one game
misconduct. •
Rick Dwinell, Ken Gosleigh and Ken
Feddema were two -goal scorers for the
Bears.. Scott Valliere, Jamie Convey and
John McPhearson scored one goal each.
Both of the Sailors' goals, scored in the
second period, were power -play efforts.
Matt Wilkinson and Darrell Durnin were
the marksmen.
In Friday's game with the Ironmen, the
teams were tied at 2-2 after one period and
Wingham led 5-3 after two periods. The
third period was scoreless. Veteran Dan
Gilchrist had two goals for Wingham.
Singles went to Brad Priestap, Paul
Brophy and Bevin-Flett.
Derek Jefferson, Tom Bean and Byron
Bowman scored for the Sailors.
The Sailors will try to re -group this
weekend with a pair of road games, Friday
in Mount Forest and Sunday in Walkerton.
