Activities for Manor residents responsibility of Cathy Wiebe In 1975 Cathy Wiebe and her family moved to Goderich from Stratford. In 1976, she started doing volunteer work at Maitland Manor, helping with crafts, bingo and in the ceramic classes. In 1982, the need for a new Activity Director became available and Cathy very capably took over this position. The program that Cathy has set up, sees the residents forming two groups each mor- ning at 9:30 in the activity room. They go through the London Free Press, checking out the headlines and discussing some of the events that are going on that day. After this they have a session of exercises. There is a break for tea and then usually a few games of cards are played before lunch. Karen McVittie is an assistant activity director and as many of the people here need to work one on one with exercises as well as at meal times, Karen's extra help ensures the residents the attention they require. Every Wednesday, Bert Kempster comes in to play the organ and provides the residents with, some good entertainment. Cathy and Pat Hook have taken charge of a group of girls called the Messengers. These girls are 5-8 years old. Their monthly meetings are held at Maitland Manor and the residents really enjoy being with the young girls, and some are even par- ticipating in the meetings. Members of the Goderich Ministerial Association always provide a minister for regular church services at the Manor each Sunday. Each week about eight residents enjoy playing the Lions TV Bingo, and there has been some winners! The Legion ladies are another group that come to Maitland Manor, usually the third Monday afternoon of each month, to enter- tain with music and readings. Also Cathy has set up something extra for the gentlemen. Once a month they have a `Men's Breakfast' with bacon, eggs and homefries, cooked up by their two favorite activity directors, Cathy and Karen. Maurice Wilkinson has been going to the Manor for at least 15 years, showing in- teresting and informative films to the residents. Another worthwhile project that has been started at the Manor is the Adopt a Grand- parent program. This is carried out by the 2nd Goderich Company of Girl Guides. Some special events corning up for the residents are - a tour around town to see the Christmas lights and decorations by the Kinsmen.
