GILBERT W. KIDD FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH I remember the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth the Second vividly. It was a wet June day in London and the streets were packed with people. Although the day was dreary and overcast, in marked contrast the people within the crowd were full with the joy of the occasion and the atmosphere was electrified with the exuberance of spon- taneous singing and cheering. Slowly the Coronation procession wound its way through the London street to the place where we were standing. As the State Coach appeared carrying the newly crowned young queen, the noise from the crow was so intense that we were deafened to the music of the accompanying guard's band. -MINISTER'S STUDY About 2000 years ago, an event occurred which pales in comparison with the corona- tion of an earthly monarch. In a stable in Bethlehem the Saviour of the World was born to the virgin Mary. There were no trumpeters to herald His arrival, in fact the majority of people couldn't have cared less. And yet, there was a herald, John the Bap- tist, who was sent by God to announce the coming of King Jesus. He called the people into the wilderness to receive a baptism of repentance. One day, Jesus Himself came to be baptized by John in the waters of the Jordan and after Jesus had been baptized the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit descended like a dove, alighting upon Jesus. Then a voice was heard from heaven say- ing, "This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased." In this advent season as we anticipate the approach of Christmas, are we deafened to the sound of God's voice as he ,seeks to be heard above the clamour of the market place? Or is He well pleased with us because we have heard His voice and responded to it; in accepting as a personal gift the love that is offered to all who have the faith to believe in Jesus Christ? Eighth annual Holly Days Volunteers from the Huron -Perth area will be selling fresh holly in Stratford, Goderich, Listowel, St. Marys and Mitchell on December 10 and 11 this year. This is the eighth annual Happy Holly Days. Holly is becoming a symbol of sup- port for The Lung Association, and more and more, people wait for Holly Days before adding this touch of tradition to their Christmas festivities. Holly can be kept fresh by placing the sprigs in a plastic bag. Sprinkle with water and then check regularly to see if additional moisture is required. By doing this, there is fresh holly available throughout the holiday season. The funds raised from Holly Days are put to good use in the community. Lung disease is on the increase and The Lung Association is fighting back in many ways. The Lung Association Huron -Perth programs include: Lungs Are for Life, school programs with films outlining the harmful effects of smok- ing; Freedom From Smoking, coutdown class offered at least twice a year; Help Yourself To Better Breathing, classes for those suffering from chronic lung disease causing shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing, (a recent course was highly suc- cessful with a capacity class of 17); and, and asthma program for children. Betty Hunter, executive director of the Huron -Perth Lung Association, is en- thusiastic about the "Lungs are for Life School Program" which is available to schools in the two counties. "We are making inroads through educating our children about the impor- tance of good lung health and the hazards of smoking, but an ambitious program such as this needs time to reach all the schools in the area," Hunter said. Christmas is the time when the spirit of giving is strong. Show that you care by either wearing a sprig of holly or decorating your home with this symbol of hope to those suffering from lung disease. For more information, call the Lunt' Association office in Stratford at 1-271-7500 Lori Zolob (seated) and Heidi Zoethout are the Holly Girls this Christmas season, as the pair are representing the Huron -Perth Lung Association. These girls are subject to asthma at- tacks. Volunteers in. Stratford, Goderich, Listowel, St. Marys and Mitchell will be selling holly this Thursday and Friday. This Friday beginning at 4:30 p.m., the Holly Girls will be selling holly at the Suncoast Mall.
