Drug search at Champion finds nothing Canadian customs officials found no drugs when they inspected containers, shipped from Thailand, of grader main- frames and cylinders at Champion Road Machinery last week. Bill Metcalfe, director of marketing ser- vices at Champion, said the four officers and a sniffer dog were conducting a routine spot check. They arrived at Cham- pion Thursday Dec. 3 around noon and left Friday afternoon. The officials checked containers and contents for drugs. The shipment was held in bond and later released, he said. To Metcalfe's knowledge this is the first check of this kind. He said, the Command Centre–Drug Division of Canada Customs from the Hamilton region, which is respon- sible for Niagara Falls to Owen Sound, is stepping up its operation in Western On- tario. It is possible Champion could be checked again at any time. Thailand is noted for drug production, said Metcalfe, and assumes this is why the shipment was inspected. He also said, other companies in the area involved in overseas business may be routinely checked. Canadian Custom's officials in Hamilton were unavailable for comment. Museum • from page 1 have covered the balance of Phase 1 in ad- dition to seeing the project through to the completion of Phase 2. The decision to go ahead with a two- phase project was made based on the federal government's indication that its grant would likely be forthcoming, Breede said. However, such has not been the case - and the latest word from Huron -Bruce MP Murray Cardiff is that a decision is ex- pected early in the new year, he added. "We will not be going ahead with Phase 2 without full federal funding," Breede said, adding that he is not prepared at this time to "write the federal government off." Costs of securing exhibits for the museum are included in the budget for the project's second phase and are likely to be included in any public fund-raising cam- paign the committee might have to undertake. "In any event, the exhibits will take four years to put in," Breede said. "If we don't get federal support, it will take longer." Hullett Township Reeve Tom Cunn- ingham was critical of the federal govern- ment for "dragging its feet on approving the grant". He also criticized his col- leagues for "nickel and diming" in their reluctance to support the committee's request. In a recorded vote, only three members of county council opposed the request.
