Bethel church 4olds outdoor nativity scene
Displaying an outdoor nativity scene,
has become a Christmas tradition with
many churches. Bethel Pentecostal
Assembly, 321 Bayfield Road, Goderich,
however, is planning to add an extra twist
to their nativity depiction this year – mak-
ing it a living, breathing production called
"Bethlehem Live".
"Bethlehem Live" will be an outdoor
drama, depicting The Christmas Story,
utilizing actors, a soundtrack, a simulated
Middle -Eastern set and live animals.
There will be seven performances of the
20 -minute production, followed by
refreshments at the church, on Dec. 16 and
17 (7 p.m. and 8 p.m.) and Dec. 18 (7 p.m.,
8 p.m. and 9 p.m.). `'
Bethel Assistant Pastor Mark Scarr said
the show will be a "whole church produc-
tion," with the church's Youth Group sup-
plying the actors and the other members of
the church handling other details such as
set construction and handling the animals
(supplied by area farmers) which will in-
clude some sheep, a goat, a calf and a
donkey.
Scarr said the church needed special
permission from the town to have live
animals in town and received good co-
operation from local town and police
department officials.
The idea of a live outdoor nativity play
Chris
—Z J,
The
as Story
was conceived by Reverend Victor Grieco
(an aquaintance of Scarr) who first
organized such an event in Hamilton.
Scarr notes that the idea has spread and
versions of "Bethlehem Live," have been
performed in the nearby centres of
Wingham and London.
Scan- expects the novelty of the idea will
attract a good crowd to the event.
"We anticipate a good crowd. I don't
think anything like this has been done here
before," he said.

Blyth Festival presents new plays
BLYTH - The Blyth Festival will present
public readings of five new plays on
December 11 and 12, results of its annual
winter writers' workshops. For the fourth
year in a row Artistic Director Katherine
Kaszas has gathered a group of professional
theatre artists from across Canada who are
taking advantage of the tranquil winter at-
mosphere of Huron County village life to
work on new plays:
Katherine describes their activity of ask,
"a retreat where the writers can focus on
their text while utilizing the skills of ex-
perienced directors and actors: The objec-
tive is to create the best piece of writing
possible".
These works in progress have potential
for the Festival's upcoming season and
many may eventually be staged at different
theatres across the country. There is a sur-
prising variety of subjects and styles in the
chosen scripts.
Colleen Curran, a familiar name to Blyth
audiences, is famous for her comedies of
past seasons. Her current project, Sacred
Hearts uses as its inspiration recent reports
of bleeding religious statues and unexplain-
ed phenomena in an examination of present
day search for spirituality and organized
religion.
Pig War by Suzanne Finlay, another name
familiar to local audiences, recounts, in a
very theatrical way, a land dispute from the
historic past. The play starts simply enough
on San Juan Island, off the British Colum-
bian coastline, with an argument involving
only two farmers. It quickly escalates and
eventually involves American and British
colonial governments, their armies, native
people and the colourful local citizenry of
both countries.
Booster McCrane is a play by David
Craig, a writer who has not only previously
directed the Festival's. Young Company, but
also was 1986's Play-wright-in-residence.
Booster is an MP from Alberta; who by win-
ning the 1989 federal election, rises from
local obscurity to national prominence

Debate is based on a lawsuit over an old

Last but not least is the story of a Mail
Order Bride who is shipped to the Canadian
prairies. Her experiences in this different
world plus the related experiences of her
daughter and grandson will be presented in
this poignant story of times gone by.
Blyth Festival's commitment to the
workshop program is an effort to encourage
budding playwrights and provide assistance
by giving Canadian plays and Canadian
Playwrights a place to flourish. The
playwrights and directors always enjoy the
input from the local residents who attend
the public readings, held this year on
December 11 at 7:30 p.m. and December 12
at 2 p.m. in Blyth Memorial Hall. Admission
is free.
