get organized
BY LOU -ANN DE BRAWN
The Big Sisters organization in Goderich
became one step closer to being realized
Tuesday evening with the formation of a
board of directors at a special meeting.
The idea of the meeting, held at the
Kinsmen Centre and chaired by Kinette
members Adele Drennan and Sandra
Pollock, was to provide and opportunity
for interested persons to learn more about
Big Sisters. During the meeting, a board
of directors was formed from interested
community persons.
The board of directors for the proposed
Goderich Big Sisters consists of: Adele
Drennan, iSandra Pollock, Judy Petty,
Joan Bradley, Melinda Harmer, Doreen
Leeson, Mary Ellen Walsh, and Lou -Ann
DeBruyn.
The board will hold its first meeting
January 5 at which time it will form com-
mittees, pass a set of by-laws and tend to
other business at hand. Members of the
organization can attend this open meeting.
Organizing a Big Sisters, operation for
Goderich has been an ongoing project for
the Goderich Kinettes since June 1986
when a proposal for the project was made
by Adele Drennan. The group decided to
support the proposal by making a
minimum commitment of two years. A
steering committee, headed by Adele
Drennan, and consisting of two Kinette
members as well as a representative of
Family and Children's Services of Huron
County, was formed in September of 1986
to get the organization in motion.
Since that time, the committee has: con-
firmed a need for Big Sisters in the com-
munity through a survey, held an informa-
tion night for interested persons, received
and studied various information packages
on Big Sisters organizations in Ontario,
hosted a barbeque for potential Big
Sisters, and drafted a copy of proposed by-
laws for the organization. At this point, the
Steering Committee felt it had gone as far
as it could on the project without forming a
board of directors.
The next steps will see the board looking
at formalizing a set of by-laws; applying
for official membership with the Big
Sisters Association of Ontario; applying to
become a non-profit charitable organiza-
tion; creating committee structures;
developing programs, policy and setting
standard guidelines; and proceeding with
screening, matching and programs for Big
and Little Sisters.
It is hoped the Big Sisters organization in
Goderich will be in operation this spring –
that is screening and matchings will occur
in the spring of 1988.
However, progress may be slow since
guaranteeing the quality of the organiza-
tion is first and foremost in the board's
minds.
Advice from the Big Sisters Association
of Ontario says: "go slow, start Small and
be prepared!" And that is what is being
done. , '
"We've been going slow," Dr"ennan
noted adding this has been done in hopes of
providing a strong structure for the
organization.
She also noted, "If we have only two or
three matches, really good and strong
ones, in the first few years, than that's
good."
Big Sisters are mature volunteers who
have made a commitment to enrich the life
of a child. Big Sisters are carefully
selected, trained, matched and monitored.
Big Sisters must establish and maintain
regular contact with their Little Sisters for
a period determined by the board (usually
18 months).
A Little Sister is a young person, often
between the ages of 6-16 (although this is
also determined by the board of directors),
who needs the individual guidance
available from a Big Sister. Little Sisters
are often from single -parent homes
although this is not necessary.
Big Sister agencies have been located
throughout Ontario for the past 70 years,
with youths in over 100 communities being
serviced by 64 member associations. Cur-
rently, there are approximately 4200 ac-
tive volunteers involved in Big Sisters.
Already some Big Sister agencies have ex-
panded to include sole -supporting teenage
mothers, the hearing impaired and
developmentally handicapped as Little
Sisters.
Members for the local Big Sisters
organization are always needed. If you
are interested in Big Sisters or just want
some more information, contact Adele
Drennan at 524675.

A hunting accident claimed the life of a
Goderich man, who was hunting alone in
Goderich Township, last week.

alone along Concession 13-14, Goderich
Township, on the morning of Nov. 30. On
Dec. 1, about 8:45 a.m., his body was found
in a thicket. A shotgun he was carrying had

through the thick undergrowth along the
roadside, fatally wounding him.

the scene.
