The in- itial meetings for forming a Lions Club here, were held in August and September 1922, and Charter Night was celebrated on Nov. 24 of that year. The Club has now reached its 65th birthday. In his Acceptance of the Charter, presi- dent R.C. Hays said: "We accept this Charter with blended feelings of honour, pride and determination ... We are pledged to advance education and public health and to eliminate any poverty in this com- munity ... If each member works for the advancement of the principles of Lionism, he will do all that is required of him. " At their meeting last week, District Governor Tom O'Shea commended the Lions for their many contributions to pro- jects locally and internationally. He challenged the Lions of 1987 to display their emblem with pride - in their own membership, the Goderich Club, their A9 District and Lions International. He brought with him a video from the Interna- tional President, Judge Brian Stevenson, Calgary, Alberta. The International President urged every Lion to become involved in. the "Skills for Adolescence" program, to combat the spread of drug abuse. This program is cur- rently being used with teenagers in schools in different countries around the world. Another current program is in the field of diabetes - and its related side effects of diseases of the heart and kidneys, gangrene, and blindness. These programs are funded from the Lions Clubs Interna- tional Foundation , to which the Goderich Lions have pledged $2000.00 in their 1987-88 year.
