Did the .excitement and chaos of Christmas morning dissolve into a blurred series of rapid sequences, With your subjects darting in and out of the frame? Well, it needn't happen again. The videotape experts at Fuji Photo Film sug- gest that; if you take the time before the holidays to plan your videotaping, and master a few basic video techniques, everyone will enjoy the videos you produce for years to come. First, prepare well in advance by check- ing your equipment and stocking up on plenty of tape that will let you relive precious moments again and again. For long term recording, it is important that you select a videocassette that will not lost its vital color and picture clarity with frequent playback. Video experts recommend that a high grade tape is a worthwhile investment, as it reproduces that highest quality picture and sound for your important recordings. Or, the recently introduced Super VHS tapes provide an alternative with greatly enchanced sharpness and color, and can be - used in standard VHS hardware. Now, it's time to concentrate on your subject matter. Remember, videotape is not like film. You cannot edit without special equipment. Therefore, it is impor- tant to plan your theme and sequence of events before you begin. You might want to start your holiday video album a few days before Christmas with a family trip to visit Santa Claus at the local shopping mall or to pick out your Christmas tree. For an introduction, focus on a string of lights, a wreath or some other holiday decoration. Next feature your child — on Santa's knee, perhaps — making sure that he/she is in the center of the frame. Stay close enough so that your subjects fill the frame. Too many objects in the ckground are distracting, and you want to a sure to capture your child's unpredic- table actions to the jovial stranger. Let your children be the stars of the show, but be sure to vary your coverage. Don't forget to focus on grandma and her adoring face, or a sibling anxiously awaiting his or her turn with Santa. As a rule, memorable home movies are made up of tightly -taped, fast -paced mini - subjects strung together. Day approaches, capture the building ex- citement by selectively videotaping school and community holiday events as well as staging your own at-home video opportunities. Take your camcorder to your child's Christmas pageants at school or church, remembering to include other children and instructors in the video. Your child will ap- preciate having a video record of his/her per. At home, a child might be encouraged to sing a favorite Christmas carol or to read a bedtime story on tape. In any case, remember that a background track of holi- day music can add "atmosphere" to the whole production. Few events can match the spontaneity of Christmas morning. Prepare the night before by setting floodlights to bounce light off the ceiling, gently illuminating the area of the tree. . The next morning take some footage of your children opening gifts with your camera on a tripod, zooming in to record their gleeful expressions. Be sure to switch camera operators so that all the adults are part of the memories. In fact, you might want to conclude with a shot of the adults in a state of contented exhaustion! After the holiday rush is over, you can share your memories with distant friends and relatives by sending them a copy or "dub" of the videotape you produced. Finally, a tip from Fuji: You can save money on your duplicating costs by pro- viding the additional blank videocassettes for dubbing to your video store.
