Dishwasher is appreciated by whole family
Christmas shopping is not always the
easiest task in the world. After all is said
and done, our best gift -giving intentions
always seem to revert back to the same
old things — a tie for dad, cologne for
morn and argyle socks for brother dearest,
items that no doubt will stay in dresser
drawers to make friends with last year's
deadbeat gifts.
This Christmas, how about something a
bit different — a present that will benefit
everyone in the family and be appreciated
daily for years to come!
Better yet, this present will mean only
one Christmas shopping trip to the store,
with delivery by Santa not down the
chimney, but right into the kitchen.
What item, pray tell, could do so much?
Why, a shiny new dishwasher, of course!
Once considered a luxury item, the
dishwasher now has become a "necessity"
in more and more homes.
In fact, Julie Bundy, manager of con-
sumer education at Maytag, emphasizes
one of the most important features of the
popular kitchen appliance.
"In today's busy households, time pro-
bably is the most precious commodity, so
an appliance like the dishwasher can be a
real freedom machine for the entire fami-
ly," she says.
While there is no doubt that a
dishwasher saves time, few people realize
that the dishwasher can benefit the entire
family, not just the female head of
household.
For example, the Association of Home
Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) recent-
ly conducted a research project that yield-
ed some surprising results.
When asked why they did not own a
dishwasher, many women surveyed said
they felt it was not a "top priority pur-
chase," since a dishwasher satisfied their
needs only, unlike a VCR or microwave
oven that could benefit the entire family.
However, the dishwasher need not be
perceived as "for women only" any more
than the microwave oven. In fact, the two
appliances are quite compatible with to-
day's busy lifestyles.
"Today, the entire family is on the go.
With no set dinner time, it is not unusual to
find family members eating meals
separately at different hours," she says.
"There is no doubt that, if you use a
microwave oven because you do not have
time to cook, then you will need a
dishwasher because there will probably be
little time to do the dishes," states Bundy.
"With a dishwasher, plates don't need to
stack up in the sink. Each person can
simply place his or her utensils in the
dishwasher after eating. It's neater and
cleaner, and a great way to get everyone
involved in a bit of housekeeping," the
Maytag home economist added.
With these factors in mind, it is easy to
see why the dishwasher can be an ideal
Christmas gift for the entire family. In
fact, there are many models and features
to choose from, including potscrubbing
cycles and energy-saving, airdry features.
Best of all, the nasty game of "who's go-
ing to wash the dishes?" can be a thing of
the past. With a dishwasher, plates, pots,
knives and forks can be quickly placed in
the dishwasher after every meal, whether
it be breakfast or the traditional midnight
snack.
Depending on family size, the
dishwasher can be stated at dayis end and
unloaded in the morning. It's a good way
to get the entire family involved and turn a
once -dreaded duty into a more pleasant
task.
So, throw away that long Christmas list.
A dishwasher is a lot more fun that a tie,
cologne and a pair of argyles combined.
And be sure to look for those smiles
when the question comes up: "Whose turn
is it to do the dishes?"
Forevermore, the answer can be "the
dishwasher ! "

Be sure to choose thoughtful gifts
The holiday season is fast approaching
and, whether you shop throughout the year
or wait until the last minute, choosing gifts
for family and friends can take the fun out
of a time for celebration.
There are ways, though, to select
presents that are sure to please everybody
— while avoiding those dreaded return
lines.
The key thing to keep in mind is to select
gifts that are thoughtful and chosen
especially for the recipient, yet avoid the
tricky areas of sizes and personal tastes.
There are safe ways to select fashion
items without too much worry. Whenever =
possible, choose clothes that come in one -
size -fits -all. Pick cheerful colors that go
with most tastes and skin tones. For per-
fume ideas, try to see which one your
friend is running low one.
Everyone needs accessories, whether it's
a scarf, tie, belt, jewelry or watch. In fact,
changing watches has become one of the
most popular ways to accessorize an outfit.
For gift -giving, watches are uaranteed to
fit and, as a fashion item, they come in a
wide variety of styles to suit every taste.
Other holiday gift ideas that are "safe
bets" include gift certificates to local
stores, but to make it more interesting,
think about giving magazine subscriptions,
movie or theater tickets, or museum

a local salon is a luxurious gift that most
people won't give themselves.
How about treating a friend to a con-
sultation with a fashion expert, or sending
over someone who specializes in organiz-
ing closets?
Then there are presents that keep com-
ing all year such as a monthly delivery of
flowers, fruit or books. The new year is
also a good time for beautiful calendars,
diaries, and desk sets.
For every kind of lifestyle, there's a holi-
day gift that's guaranteed to be a winner
this season.
