Funds increase
for all hospitals
Ontario hospitals will have an overall in-
crease of about 6.9 per cent in operating
funds for 19 i -89, Health Minister Elinor
Caplan announced today.
All Ontario hospitals will receive a basic
grant increase of about 4.4 per cent in
1988-89. In addition, the budget increase
allotted by the ministry will give a further
2.5 per cent for growth in hospital
programs.
The base on which the increase will be
applied will be determined once the
ministry and the Ontario Hospital Associa-
tion complete the review of the disposition
of the funds normally allocated by the
ministry for the employer contributions
required by the Hospitals of Ontario Pen-
sion Plan.
The increases will bring total ministry
spending on hospitals for the year to app -
proximately $5.4 billion.
The additional 2.5 per cent will provide
for:
-new programs to be started in the next
fiscal year;
-ministry-approved programs started or
expanded in 1987-88;
-growth in life-support programs in
designated teaching hospitals and other
major hospitals (these include renal
dialysis, cardiovascular surgery,
chemotherapy, total parenteral nutrition,
intraocular implants and perinatal
health) ;
-workload increases due to hospitals
treating more patients; and
-an additional one per cent for hospitals
with fewer than 50 beds.
"The increase will enable hospitals to
meet inflationary pressures as well as the
usual growth costs," Caplan said. "In ad-
dition, we hope hospitals will be among
those submitting proposals for those
special programs referred to by the
premier when he announced the multi-
year $100 million innovative health
strategies fund."
