Canadian Coast Guard ship, the
Henry Larsen, enroute from Victoria
Very little is happening these days in
shipbuilding on the Canadian side of the
Great Lakes. The last freighter produced
by our shipyards was delivered four years
ago. Since then, only small vessels and
repair work have kept shipbuilders busy.
The slump has even brought about the
demise of Ontario's busiest shipyard at
Collingwood.
We may be reaching a bit in drawing at-
tention to a new ship from the West Coast.
But it's quite possible she may be seen
here on the lakes some time in the future.
She is the new Canadian Coast Guard
Ship Henry Larsen, named after the
RCMP superintendent who commanded
the little wooden motorized schooner St.
Roch on her epic traverse of the Northwest
Passage in 1944.
The Larsen is said to be enroute this fall
from Victoria, . B.C. to her new base at
Dartmouth, N.S. She will replace the
35 -year-old CCGS Labrador as an
icebreaker for winter service on the Great
Lakes, St. Lawrence River and gulf, and
the east coast of Newfoundland. Her sum-
mers will be spent i>z Arctie $epi •
Built at a cost of.$91.3 million, the Larsen
was completed by Versatile Pacific
Shipyards Inc., formerly, Burrard Yar-
rows, of Vancouver. She was designed by
the Canadian firm of German and Milne,
and is 327 feet (99.8 m) in overall length.
With her diesel-electric powerplant, she is

To a layman, the business of . owning
ships can be fraught with mystery. When a
new vessel enters service, its actual
owners may havenothing to do with shipp-
ing. They simply invest in this enormous
mass of floating steel and charter it to a
shipping company to operate and bring in
profits.
Take the Tarantau of Canada Steamship
Lines for example. When launched at Coll-
ingwood in 196,4, the big self-unloader was
actually built for Canadian General Elec-
tric Co. of Peterborough, who also happen-
ed to be the supplier of her twinsteam tur-
bines. She was bareboat chartered to CSL
for' -two years untq the latter bought her.
But in 1978 the owner of the Tarantau
was officially listed as Power Corporation
of Canada. What happened to CSL, whose
name and colors the ship still wore? CSL
was listed only as managers of the vessel.
Themystery was somewhat explained
with the knowledge that Power Corp. was

Tugboat news: With all the scrapping of
old freighters along the lakes, the tugs tow-
ing them to boneyards are enjoying con-
siderable activity.
One oldtimer headed from Duluth under
tow to the lower lakes, the American ship
A. H. Ferbert, was so troublesome that
seven different tugs were needed to get her
as far as the Welland Canal. They were
Glenada of Sarnia, W.J. Ivan Purvis of the
Sault, Elmore M. Misner, Nanticoke, Bar-
bara. Ann, Port Huron, and Glenside,
Hamilton, plus two unidentified tugs.
The McKeil tug Argue Martin of
Hamilton reportedly blew her engine while
towing two scrappers down the St.
Lawrence with her sister ship Glenevis.
Another sister, the Glenbrook towed the
Martin to Morrisburg, then took over her
job with the tow. •
The newsletter Lake Log Chips, source
of "the foregoing news, repeats a report
from Manitoulin Island that the former
30 -foot Gore Bay tug Nellie Ted Purvis of
the Sault sank in Lake Superior. She V*►nk

a big wave overwhelmed her somewhere
between Batchawana Bay and
Michipicoten Island.
Lake Superior continues to warn that she
won't be trifled with.
