Balloon found
in Maine
LEGION

Word was received by telephone at 6:30
p.m. on Saturday Nov. 14 at Legion Branch
109 that one of the Branch 109 Goderich
balloons released on Wednesday Nov. 11 to
launch the 60th anniversary celebrations
of Branch 109 was found by Rodger Willett,
of Patten Maine.
Patten Maine is a small town in north
east central Maine and is located approx-
imately 300 miles north east of Boston,
Massachusetts.
It is estimated the balloon soared some
675 miles in a: north east direction on its
trip to Patten Maine.
The Branch is presently attempting to
confirm this sighting as there is a prize for
the Branch 109 balloon which is found the
furthest distance from Goderich. There is
good reason to believe that Mr. Willett
could be a winner.

The guest speaker, Dominion First Vice
President Gaston Garceau, who was in-
troduced by Ontario Command Ladies
Auxiliary Second Vice President Evelyn
Carroll, spoke on the changing role of the
Royal Canadian Legion and stressed
several of the major problems facing our
organization at this time. The speaker
stated that the Legion must press for fur-
ther assistance without any limits, for
those veterans, with or without overseas
service, and for veterans' widows who are
also now reaching their declining years,
and need help before it is too late.
Dominion First Vice Garceau referred
to the campaign of the Royal Canadian
Legion to financially help our less for-
tunate comrades in other commonwealth
countries through the Prince Philip
Appeal.
The Legion is working with DVA and the
Department of Health and Welfare to ex-
tend our program which will allow Legion
seniors to remain in their own homes and
is interested in seeing that this is available
to all senior citizens.
The Legion is working closely with all
Canadian Forces Bases to ensure that all
service personnel are aware of the advan-
tages of joining and promoting the future
strength of the Legion.
The Legion is continually monitoring the
defence policy of the Government in its at-
tempt to ensure that Canada remains free
and democratic.
The speaker concluded that the next
Dominion convention Ip Ottawa will be
critical and we must make the right deci-
sions if the Royal Canadian Legion is to ef-
fectively serve our veterans, our citizens
and our nation.
The speaker was thanked by Past Presi-
dent Robert Chapman and presented with
a colour aerial photo of our town.
Dominion First Vice President assisted
by Branch Honours and Awards chairman

Branch 109 Past Presidents Roy Mugford
and Garnet "Bud" Mathieson.

the thanks of the past presidents to the
Branch.
Mayor Eileen Palmer brought greetings
and congratulations from the town of
Goderich and M.P.P. Jack Riddell spoke
on behalf of the province of Ontario, and
congratulated the Branch on attaining six-
ty years of service, to the veteran and
community. M.P. Murray Cardiff con-
gratulated the Branch on its achievements
over the past 60 years and presented fram-
ed scrolls of congratulations from the
Prime Minister of Canada, from the
Minister of Veterans Affairs, and from

If you have a family member or close
friend suffering from emphysema or lung
cancer, you know personally how important
it is to give to The Lung Association.
"The response to our campaign last year
enabled us to move ahead with our com-
munity programs," says Betty Hunter, ex-
ecutive director. "With the full support of
the people in Huron -Perth Counties we will
be able to continue the expansion of the
organization's work."
There are more than one million Cana-
dians with asthma. Each year, there are
over 57,000 admissions to hospitals for treat-
ment approximately 150 patients daily.
The Lung Association helps countless
families through the Family Asthma Pro-
gram. The program benefits each member
of the family. The goal is to help children to
understand that they can participate in
regular school activities and generally live
a normal life, and provide a better
understanding of how properly -prescribed
medication can keep asthma controlled.
The Lung Association continues to fight
vigorously for a smoke-free society.
"Programs such as Countdown - the suc-
cessful stop -smoking program is proving
very popular," states Mrs. Hunter. "We
also offer a very comprehensive kit called
Freedom From Smoking, At Work to help
companies establish a smoking policy. Peo-
ple with chronic lung problems also need
help and support. There are opportunities
for socializing and to find out how to cope
with their disease. Better Breathing Clubs
provide this opportunity."
The Lungs Are For Life School Program
is a major effort by the organization to
reach our young people. It is critical that
they have the knowledge about the impor-
tance of healthy lungs to enable them to en-
joy a healthy lifestyle.
The Lung Association is strong in its com-
munity involvement. It can be stronger if
each member of the community joins in the
fight against lung disease. Use Christmas
Seals. They are your symbol, showing that
you care and that you support The Lung
Association.
