Plan to Visit Falls Reserve in 1988
Winter is upon us. Instead of being de-
pressed try this enjoyable activity: plan
your holiday for next year. If your favorite
summer activities include camping,
swimming, fishing, hiking, sightseeing or
just relaxing in the sun, plan now to visit
Falls Reserve Conservation Area at Ben -
miller.
Falls Reserve offers the best of two
camping worlds, nature's beauty in an out-
of-the-way location, with modern camping
facilities for tents and recreational ve-
hicles.
The 230 acre park is located in a large
meander of the Maitland River. Campers
are greeted by a series of wooded plateaus
that step gently down to the sharply de-
fined banks of the sparkling Maitland
River. The shoreline is quite steep in
places providing scenic lookouts. About,
half of the park is forested in both hard-
wood and conifer stands.
The natural and magi -made features of
the park provide many opportunities for
outdoor fun. You can swim beside the step-
like falls, hike along the park's nature
trail, or for the less ambitious, just relax
along the riverbank.
The Maitland River is famous for its
fishing, especially in the spring and fall as
rainbow trout and salmon make their
spawning runs upstream. The park also
has a stocked fish pond ideal for younger
anglers.
The Falls Reserve has playground
equipment along with facilities for base-
ball and volleyball.
The park provides an ideal base for ex-
ploring the attractions of the Goderich
area, located only a few minutes away.
You are certain to feel at home on one of
the campsites. Hydro and water hookups

The final recipient was the Village of
Lucknow. In the past several years the vil-
lage has co-operated with the MVCA on a
number of projects. Lucknow was the first
municipality to enter into a maintenance
agreement for a conservation area — the
Lucknow Waterworks Conservation Area.
In addition to donating this property to
the MVCA, the village also donated the
legal survey costs for the land. Lucknow
also participated in the authority's Ero-
sion Control Assistance Program for two
years.

Construction Regulations May Affect Your Project
If you own property along a stream,
river or ravine you are probably affected
by fill, construction ` and alterations to
waterways regulations. These regulations
control the • placing of fill, the construction
of buildings or structures and the
alteration of a river or stream. On lands
under this regulation a permit is required
from the Conservation Authority before
such works are undertaken.
It is the responsibility of the Maitland
Valley Conservation Authority to protect
rivers, streams and .wetlands and the
mutual needs of adjacent landowners. In-
dividuals living along a river or • stream
often do not realize the problems that may
occur if they change their property. Fill,
construction and -or alteration , may
jeopardize not only the owner's property
but also that of upstream and downstream
neighbors. Fill • or structures placed on
lands associated with, the river will affect
the natural storage capacity of the Aver
floodplain. his may present a hazard to
life and property. Increased erosion leads
to sedimentation that affects water quality
and reduces the value of the river for fish
and wildlife.
If you are planning to undertaken any
construction, place fill, or alter a water-
course, your first action should be to con-
tact the Conservation Authority. The
Authority staff will determine if your pro-
perty falls under regulation and if SO, they
will explain the policies affectingyour de-,
velopment plans.
If your property is regulated, you will
need a permit to:
a) place or remove fill
b) undertake new construction of any
sort -.
c) renovate or add to existing; structures
d) divert, dam, deepen or widen a Water-
course.
atercourse.
Remember that these regulations exist
for your protection, as well as that of your
neighbors along theriver.
