BY BREWSTER
On a day in which both Viking football
teams lost the championship on the last
play of the game, there was still cause for
celebration as our two major ball leagues
in town had their banquets.
I don't know how the men's fastball ban-
quet went, but the GMSL Awards Banquet
was a super success, to say the least!
On behalf of the entire league, I would
like to thank and congratulate Clare
Rodges and the entire Local 1863. team for
a tremendous job of planning and running
this banquet. Many people chose not to at-
tend! That was their loss - because the peo-
ple who bought those tickets had a hell of a
time from all reports! Next year, I am
sure, we will have a fight for tiekets!
This is the second time this year, that a
"team" has come to the forefront to save a
GMSL tradition! As you are no doubt
aware, we are desperately short of people
who are dumb enough to assume the
hassles of an executive position! We would
not havehad a tournament or a banquet
this year, if it h -ad not been for the.
Elevators and Local 1863. They both came
to the leagues rescue and both put on a
show that is unmatched in past history.
Our strength as a league is not because of
individuals but rather - "TEAMS"!!
I am proud to be a member of this
league. We are the largest league m town.
I can now see a new tradition developing!
For certain functions, a team is in charge,
not an individual. It proved its worth this
year by mistake, not planning! It just hap-
pened - and it was very successful! With
this sort of dedication, it is no wonder that
we are growing - almost beyond what we
can handle.
league gives
I can't express in words, how proud I am
to be a member of the GMSL! It is the
same feeling I have about coaching a "Vik-
ing" team. Our league is becoming "Vik-
ing” in my mind - and I'm going to play un-
til I'm 105 (with apologies to my team
mates!).
OK, back to the banquet. As everyone is
now aware, the divisional champions, Port
Albert Bulldogs, Dearborn Steelers and
Little Bowl, all received their Divisional
Trophy plus and individual keeper!
Though the road to the championship may
have been rough, you all proved that you
were winners! But don't get lazy - because
there are a lot of unrewarded winners out
here that "want you” next year!
Our divisional MVP are selected on the
basis of MVP scoresheet submissions
throughout the season. Though there may
be some controversy over the process,
there is no doubt that the eventual winners
are very worthy recipients. Capturing the
honours in A, B and C divisions respective-
ly were Randy Stoddart from the Coyotes,
Bob Graham from Home Hardware and
Glenn Green from Murphy's Law.
The league MVP is based on the voting
procedure also, but requires executive in-
put and agreement. This year's recipient
was Rick Sowerby from the Thruway Muf-
fler team. Rick is a long time member of
the GMSL who has always been regarded
very highly by his fellow league members.
This year was his!
Congratulations on a super year and an
even better past in our league. You now
join a very elite group, and over the years,
have proved, time and again, that you
belong! You were voted on by your peers -
and that says it all!
The most sportsmanlike player award is
awards
based on a vote by team reps at the annual
fall meeting. Once again, this is an award
from your peers. Bill Black from Home
Hardware was the winner with Ray
Hallam coming a very close second! A
vote by peers is second to none in
importance.
The Presidents Trophy is awarded an-
nually to a person who goes well beyond
the call of duty, to help our league in apy
way. This year's recipient, Mary Penn-
ington, was not even a member of our
league! The tournament was run by Earl,
Brian and the Elevator ball team but they
were backed up 100 percent by their
spouses. This was truly an Elevator Tour-
nament and Mary Pennington, wife of
Earl, was awarded the "Presidents
Trophy" - though it could have gone to all
the spouses collectively!
This banquet finished the 1987 GMSL
season. It also marked the end of the
Frawley Era! Sure, some will rejoice, but
let me assure you, that Tim Frawley has
made an inmeasurable contribution to our
league. Not just last year, but over the
years! Frawley has a place in the GMSL
Hall of Fame - no doubt about it! His skills
and experience will remain with us,
though in the capacity of a past president.
He had a vision and a goal that is shared by
only a few in our league. His leadership
over the years has our league well on its
way to accomplishing this goal! 'I pe--
sonally, have been with you all the way,
and on behalf of the Ieague, I thank you for
your dedication over the years.
Dave Cloet, returns as president next
year, with much past experience and
many new ideas! I can hardly wait for the
88 season to unfold. As you, I love
slowpitch! What a sport!
Senior Girls prepare for playoffs
with strong tournament showing
The G.D.C.I. Senior Vikings prepared
for their upcoming play-offs in Huron
Perth girls basketball with an excellent
showing in the 1st Annual Pete Howard
Classic at John Paul II high school in Lon-
don last weekend. The.Goderich girls battl-
ed their way through the 12 team tourney
to meet the host team John Paul II in the
final.
The Vikes matched the highly rated Lon-
don team basket for basket but lost at the
foul line. The final score was 49-43 in a
game that displayed excellent basketball.
Vikings Katharine Murphy and Jenny
Allen were named to the All -Star team
while Mary Katherine Stapleton was nam-
ed her team's M.V.P. and ErikRobinson
her team's most sportsmanlikelayer
award.
The Vikes opened the tourney with a
68-63 triumph over London Saunders. The
triple "A" school took an early 11-0 lead on
the Vikings but the Goderich girls came
back to make the score 14-11 and never lost
the lead again. Jenny Allen with 25 and
Mary Katherine Stapleton with 22 led all
scores.
Katharine Murphy controlled the pace of
the game as she scored six points. Other
scorers were Rhonda Teal eight, Erin
Robinson four, Pam Fritzley two,
Maureen Stapleton one.
The Vikings then trampled London Ban -
ting 63-20 with Jenny Allen scoring 18,
Mary Katherine Stapleton 14 and
Katharine Murphy 13. Erin Robinson add-
ed six with Pam Fritzley, Rhonda Teal and
Mary Jo Evans each scoring four points.
The Goderich girls then defeated a
physical Chatham -Kent team 43-37 to gain
a birth in the final. Mary Katherine
Stapleton with 16 and Jenny Allen withi15.
led the Goderich scorers. Erin Robinson
added six points, Katharine Murphy four
and Maureen Stapleton two.
The Vikings put on a breath taking
shooting display through the tournament
as they played outstanding team basket-
ball. Katharine Murphy could easily ha`ve
been named Tournament M.V.P. as she t+e-
bounded, passed and made key shots to
provide her team with great floor leader-
ship. Jenny Allen's hot shooting caused her
to draw special attention from the oppos-
ing teams.
The Vikings play South Huron here on
Wednesday in a sudden death semi final as
they set out to reclaim the Huron Perth'
Championship they lost last year.

The Goderich Midget hockey team
scored 12 goals in two games last week, un-
fortunately, they gave up 14. The Midgets
hammered Parkhill 10-0 on Sunday in
Parkhill and lost 14-2 to St. Mary's in St.
Mary's on Nov. 4.
George Sideris picked up a hat -trick and
eight other Goderich players scored
singles in the rout over Parkhill. Mike
Romph opened the scoring from Greg
Alcock early in the first period. Jason
Million scored from Alcock to give
Goderich a 3-0 lead. His goal was squeezed
between two Sideris markers, the last one
an unassisted effort.
Alcock scored a goal of his own on the on-
ly scoring play of the second period.
Alcock's unassisted goal gave Goderich a
commanding 5-0 lead heading into the
third.
Wayne Nivins, Greg Crawford, Mike
Beange, Mike Radford and Sideris all
scored in the final five minutes of the
game. Sideris' goal came with just 36

ST. MARY'S 14 GODERICH 2
Nivins' two unassisted goals were the on-
ly bright spots for the Goderich Midgets in
a 14-2 road loss to St. Mary's. However,
the play was much closer than the score in-
dicated. Goderich kept up with St. Mary's
—•1
in several end-to-end rushes.
St Mary's had scored three first period
goals before Nivins put Goderich ,on the
board. He scored his second goal with two
seconds left in the game. Goderich goalie,
Shawn Currie faced 41 shots.
Elevator ' Bantams win and lose
Last week's action saw the Goderich
Elevator Bantams win 9-4 in an exhibition
game vs. Seaforth and in a league game
against St. Marys they lost 4-2.
In Seaforth the bantams scored three
goals in each period to gain the victory.
Goal scorers included Aaron Duckworth,
Shawn Talbot, Chris O'Neill and Kelly
MacDonald with one goal each, while Tim
Harrison netted a pair and Brian Lane
scored a hat trick. Picking up assists were
O'Neill with four, Sean O'Brien with three
and Talbot assisting on one goal. The team
played well defensively backing up the
goaltending of Colin MacKinnon and Bob
Lumley.
In St. Marys the game was a close con-
test. The home team opened the scoring
but a goal by Tim Harrison assisted by
Shawn Talbot knotted the score before the
first period ended. The teams traded goals
in period two with Jeff Hodges rifling the
puck past the St. Marys.goaltender after a
nice pass from Talbot. Strong goaltending .
by Bob Lumley and some good defensive
work by Jean-Paul Cauchi , and Mike
Stegenstad kept the game tied until late in
the third. St. Marys gained the lead with a
powerplay goal at the 11:06 mark and
scored the clincher at 12:37. Goderich was
outshot in the game 37 to 10.
Next league action is away on Nov. 14 vs.
Mt. Brydges before returning for a home
game on Nov. 21 vs. Port Stanley.

Petites lose 4-2 in Seaforth
The Goderich Lions Petite Ringette
team lost 4-2 to Seaforth in Seaforth Sun-
day. The score could have been much
higher except for the strong goaltending of
Karen Harrison and the outstanding work
of the defence: Kristy Dineen, Alyson
Baer, -Leslie Ann Ginn and Danielle
Theriault.
Seaforth ,scored two goals in the first
period. Early in the second, Heather Moss
made it 2-1 on a pass from Erin Purser.
