Short Term Commjr ity Martha gets exhausted watching hockey One night, I was watching Chicago and Toronto play hockey. Two very strong teams, rough and fast. In one instance, the Blues and Reds bashed into the fence. The one on the fence had his arm and stick high in the air. I thought he was going to bash the other fellow but he brought the stick down and they both moved off the fence and went about their skating. Boy, was I breathless. I was sure there would be bloodshed the way they had bashed against each other but they skated off like they were old„ friends. Perhaps they were. From then on I watched more closely. Soon I saw one Red bash the White from behind and down he went — the White that is — stretched full length on the ice. His head wasn't on the ice. He was watching to see if the Red would get a penalty. For a minute, I thought the Red was home free but the White didn't get up, then the penalty was given. So, up he jumped, mission ac- complished. He was feeling fine and the Red sneered at him from the penalty box. Someone scored! Toronto had a goal. Gee, you really have to keep your eyes on the pcuk. I find it almost impossible. I'm in- terested in what and how those fellows move. There was an extra man on -the ice. He had been rushing around for some time, about 15 minutes, before the referee noticed. Impossible — but then who's counting? Anyway, someone got a penalty and everyone seems to enjoy that. Toronto 3. Chicago 1. Now we're getting a lot of advertising. Where did the game go? ROUND 5t\! ABOUT With Martha Rathburmn Okay. Now the guys are in a tight group. Suddenly you see a man stretched out on the ice. Now they're going to fight. They're discussing Brown's assault. I don't know is he was the assaulter or the assaultee. The image of fine hockey is going down the drain. This is not a roller derby and not a dirty wrestling match. Someone should be thrown out of the game before one of them gets killed. All this slugging is not needed. The audience is very angry. Someone there may get slugged. Several have been kicked out;of the game for fighting dirty. "If you play with the bull, you'll get the horn." The announcer said that. Hockey is getting paranoid. "Brown's a dummy," someone yells. Professional hockey is being questioned. What's wrong with hockey? Doggone it, there's nothing wrong with hockey, they're just getting too enthused, too strong, and too hot headed. There's going to be a blowup right away soon about all the roughness. Even the audience thinks it's not needed. Second period coming up. A quick power play, high, hard shot but the goalie catches it in his mitt. He's pretty good. Two big bruisers get the heave-ho for roughing again. Leafs 4. Chicago 1. Mgre than once the referee has been sitting on top of that nar- row fence. They go around the ice again and first thing you see the referee on the fence again. That's hard you know but with so- meone slashing at the puck beside him, he had better be out of the way. A penalty for hooking. Those guys are sure wound up. I'm getting a headache from watching the red and white flashing about. Why don't I take up knitting? The score is 4-2, putting Chicago right back in the game. That doggone organ amd who -ever is playing it makes everyone fighting mad in their excitement. He just pounds on the keys as he watches the game. I'm sure he has no idea what he is doing or how it sounds and he couldn't care less. They're at it again. Somehow, I always thought that just slashing at the opponents arm was a no -no but there was plenty of that going on. Now, two big bruisers catch a third man between them and do they/ ever bounce .him. This has happened more than once in this game, probably the same two guys doing it. The. poor middleman sure gets bounced. He can't evenfight back. Sharpof eye and quickness of the hand certainly makes hockey an exciting game. I'm pooped. Can't watch any more of it. You can have it.
