The Goderich Signal-Star, 1987-11-11, Page 50 inion Wa.nts convicted ,murderers kept perm ently locked. up Dear Editor: I feel murderers should be declared a danger to society and should therefore be locked up away from society forever, without day passes or possibility of parole for the rest of their life. When the death penalty was in effect and was imposed on a convicted murderer it not only set an example to other would-be murderers but it removed such a person from our society forever and gave the public some sense of security. Since the death penalty has been abolish- ed the murderer has nothing to lose. They can rape, rob, torture and murder; the on- ly penalty that can be imposed on them is a 'life sentence' - 25 years - with day passes and time off for good behavior. Then they are out in society to do it all over again. According to the news on a local radio station 130 such murders have occurred since 1975. That is far top many to be classified as an isolated case. It's time some positive action was taken to change the penal system. Where is our protection from these murderers? These - murderers have shown no remorse; but certainly proven by their ac- tions that they have no intention of chang- ing their way of life. They will not hesitate to murder and rob to take what they want from society. It is time the penal system was changed LETTERS gissiosim to deal more harshly with these criminals and put them away forever. When a person commits murder they automatically give up their chill rights. They don't consider the civil rig is of the person(s) they murder. At the moment our judicial system does not protectus from these known criminals. I demand a change to keep these convicted murderers off our streets and out of our society. This letter has been circulated as an ap- peal to the public for their support and has been sent to the following: Hon. Ray Hnatyshyn The Minister of Justice, Prime Minister Mulroney, MP Gordon Taylor, Chairman of the Justice Committee David Daubney and Joe Clark MP, The Honourable James Kelleher, Solicitor General, House of Commons, Ottawa,'On- tario, K1A 0A6. Mackey Cochrane, Alberta. Relationship with God important Dear Editor: The 1st Commandment states: "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" and Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life, no man cometh unto the Father God) but by me." It appears the Anglican Church of Canada would have the 1st Com- mandment say: "Thou shalt better . understand and respect all other; gods_ before me," and are we to believe there are many ways to God when Jesus said He and He alone is the way? Teaching the world's religions cannot • change people or find God with their rules and regulations, only a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ can change a per- son's heart. Behind the facade of religion is your god, Satan who will keep you in darkness. All of you and your children need the truth, you want hope"for tomorrow and you wouldn't truly find it in any' pagan religion but only in Jesus Christ who loves you all. He died so that the bonds of sin and darkness would be broken and He lives today waiting to set CORRECTION . RE: SOUND VALUE -RIGHT CHOICE FLYER PAGE 9 - #99-7609-8. 3 -POSITION STROLLER. And here I was, a grown man, a professional person, dressed in my Sunday best, with my foot raised unprofessionally in the bathroom sink of hot water, while the other one waited patiently for its turn. I could only think, "WHAT ON EARTH HAS BROUGHT ME TO THIS?" That was seven years ago, and I had just experienc- ed my first Goderich Remembrance bay service on Court House Square. I even con- sidered it might be my last. Yet, each year I join others in the com- munity, in all kinds of weather, to engage privately, as well as corporately, in an act of remembrance. And, each year I feel more sure of why I am there, and why I even encourage the younger generation to REMEMBER with us. The truth is that while the world around us often seduces us into believing that we discover the best things of life in the pre- sent, the reality is that life has little pur- pose and meaning without acknowledging the awareness of the past and future. Apart from the past, we have no present. We become like a ship in the night, without rudder which gives direction, and without hope which gives purpose. The truth of all. this is as ancient as history. The Old Testa- ment people were never encouraged to conquer, or to simply exist. Their daily lives were strongly tied to a process of remembrance. Their hopes in the future were based upon that remembering of the way by which they had come, and commit- ting themselves to the lessons that the remembering gave them. In the New Testament, we are called to the same process in the Christian tradi- tion, when at the highest and most sacred festival, the people of God are invited in the Eucharist to DO THIS IN REMEM- BRANCE. The key word is the DOING. It is actively living daily life in the knowledge of who we are and what we are called upon to be, in the light of the way by which we have come. , Remembrance Day does this for me, even through the bitter cold. We are not called upon to celebrate the "glory" of wars, but to remember that our present and future take on meaning and purpose, when we take seriously the consequences of the alternatives. If we fail to.DO, to com- mit Ourselves, to the things that cry for Peace and Justice, we lose. . It seems to me to be like the title of a book I. saw which read; LIVING. BET- WEEN MEMORY AND HOPE. I guess that's where I find meaning ... and find it again on November 11.
