The Laureate Degree is the senior degree of Beta Sigma Phi and Tuesday's initiation marked the first such degree in Goderich. The nine members, all of whom have been in sorority at least 18 years, inducted into the Laureate Degree were: standing, left to right, Susan Grove, Verna Kane, Shirley Baechler, Lorraine Baechler and Martha Rathburn; sitting, left to right, Barb Moss, Helene Alcock, Ellen Connelly and Karen Sturdy. 1 photo by Lou -Ann DeBruyn ) Urban rebate issue in committee from page 1 said a delegation from Goderich Town Coun- cil had attended the last roads committee meeting and "considerable discussion" on the urban rebate issue took place at that meeting. During the committee's report, council was told Goderich Mayor Eileen Palmer and the town's commissioner of works, Ken Hunter, had presented a brief on the county contributions to urban municipalities which outlined the hardships the proposed reduc- tion would impose on the town's system. The delegation also pointed out to the committee that the County of Huronhas enjoyed greater increases in. provincial subsidies than its urban municipalities. At last month's meeting, some members of council expressed concern that reduction in the rebates would result in higher taxa- tion at the local level for the towns and villages within the county. Statistics hand- ed out by Exeter Reeve Bill Mickle pro- jected the losses to each of the urban municipalities should the reduction be allowed. Strictly in terms of total dollars lost, Goderich would appear to be the greatest loser, with $58,653 subtracted from a rebate of $131,970 at the present level. Each municipality is annually assessed for its contribution to the county, road levy. At present, however, the five towns and five villages receive a 45 per cent rebate on that levy since most have no ,county roads, or very few, within their boundaries.
