Often people will soy they do not attend church because they can worship just as well by sitting alone and meditating about things spiritual. While it may do something for the meditator, it does very little for others. Be- ing an example and an inspiration to others, is a large part of the value in attending public worship services. When you go to, church, you tell others that worshipping is imporant to you. Worshipp- ing in a group of like-minded Christians con serve to strengthen the faith of all those around you. Jesus Christ called his followers to be, witnesses. 'There is no greater witness than' to be diligent in public worship, self-dicipline and everyday example of your faith. ReIiii.m St. George's Church welcomes Reverend Peter Baldwin, of Goderich, cannot recall a time when he has not felt the call of God in his life. Even as a young lad in his hometown of Breaston in the County of Derbyshire, in the Midlands of England, where he attend- ed St. Michael's Anglican Church, Peter Baldwin looked forward to the day when he would serve in the ordained ministry. On Sunday evening, March 1, 1980, at St. Paul's Anglican Cathedral,London, On- tario, several -careers and o many years away from his childhood, the Reverend Peter C. Baldwin, of the Parish St. George's Goderich and Christ Church Port Albert, was ordained by the Right Reverend Geoffory Parke -Taylor, then Suffragen Bishop of the Diocese of Huron. For Peter Baldwin, the travels that took him from the construction business in Breaston, where he worked with his father after first leaving school, to St. Paul's Cathedral, London Ontario, has been a long, but rewarding journey. He credits many people for playing an influential and guiding role in his life, one of these persons being a Mr. Stevenson, superintendent of the Free Methodist Church in Breaston. "It was through his example and en- thusiasm that Jesus became a real person in my life," says Baldwin. Later, Dr. Pemberton, now Canon Pemberton, of St. Michael's Church, Breaston, inspired Mr. Baldwin to con- tinue towards his goal of entering the ministry. With encouragement from yet another minister, Father Barber of St. Werburgh's Parish, Spondon, County of Derbyshire, Baldwin undertook his theologican train- ing from 1964-7 at Brasted College, Kent and Litchfield Theological College, Lit- chfield, as an ordinand for the Church of England. Then, in 1968, realizing that the ministry took in a much wider scope than that of the offices and priestly functions of the church, Baldwin interrupted his theological studies, and switched to social work. After a period of time working in psychiatric hospital in England Mr. Raldwin came to Canada to work with the Children's Aid Society in Napanee. "I needed to work more closely with peo- ple and to develop a greater understanding of pastoral care in involvement. I needed this, too . for my own personal growth in terms of being more aware of how a com- munity functions on a day-to-day basis. I had an image of priesthood that had more to do with the sactuary ... on in, than the sanctuary ... on out, where the people are," he said. Following his time with the Children's Aid Society, Baldwin accepted a position with the John Howard Society, of pastor Reverend Peter Baldwin, new Anglican pastor for the Parish of St. eorge's Goderich and Christ Church Port Albert, is flanked by Parish Wardens Harry ykstra and Helen Videan during his induction ceremony into the parish, Oct. 4. (photcoy Mac Campbell) London, where he worked as a National Parole Supervisor and After Care worker. With the encouragement of r'r- John Wagland of Trinity St. Thomas, he spoke with the late Bishop Carmen Queen of the Diocese of Huron, who suggested that Baldwin undertake studies at. Huron Col- lege. He graduated from the Master of Divinity program at the University of Western Ontario in 1979. During his training, Baldwin worked as a supervisor at St. Leonard's House, Lon- don, a halfway -house serving provincial parolees. Prior to moving to Goderich, Baldwin served the congregations of St. Peter's Sauble Beach, Milverton, Atwood and Millbank, St. Paul's Essex, and Trinity Cottam. Baldwin has served as Legion Chaplain in Milverton and Essex. He served as District Chaplain to the Windsor Militia District and is currently Chaplain to the Royal Canadian Regiment Reserve Bat- talion based as Wolesley Barracks in Lon- don and holds the rank of Major. Ask Baldwin if he feels that tlfe route he chose to serving in the ministry is the right one and he will tell you that "it was right for me. I needed to experience more in - volvement in the comnpnity life so I could grow in terms of undk'standing the pro- blems that people fatj as well as to -ex- perience and to be operto greater spiritual growth." Yes, it has been a 10 journey from the con"structionbusiness in Breaston,England to S. Paul's Cathedral in London, Ontario. Bu for Peter Baldwin, it has been a great exprience in Christian growth in ministry. Baldwin is rnarriji to the former Suzanne Wyatt of Wllkerton, and they have three children, I<rrsten eleven years, Anthony eight years ail Nigel three years. Baldwin was inducts into the Parish of St. George's and aril Church by William Graham, Archdeacofl of the Saugeen's; Sunday evening. Qt. 4. The guest preachers for the serve was Canon Peter Davison, Rector of Blimp Cronyn Church, London, Ontario. Gratings were brought to the Baldwin's by tit Reverend Pat Nun, Regional Dean of buth Saugeen, and areas Anglican clery.
