Don't get caught by an early freeze this
year. Take the time now to prepare your
car for the cold winter months ahead.
The experts at Prestone offer these
guidelines to help you give your car the
winter protection it needs:
• Check Antifreeze/Coolant Level — If
your car's cooling system has an anti-
freeze/coolant recovery reservoir, the ra-
diator should be full of antifreeze. If your
car does not have a recovery reservoir,
the antifreeze .level should be about one
inch below the filler neck when -the en-
gine is cold.
Antifreeze/coolant like Preston Ad-
vanced Formula is especially good for
cooling systems because it not only
lowers the freezing point of the system to
-- 84°F., but raises its bgilover tempera-
tures to 276°F.
Protects all types of metals
In addition, the product incorporates
an inhibitor system that protects against
corrosion on all types of metals typically
found in cooling systems. •
• Inspect For Contamination — Visually
inspect the antifreeze, which should be
free from sediment. If sediment is pres-
ent, the cooling system should be flushed
and refilled with fresh antifreeze.
• Flush Out Radiator Corrosion: — Old
antifreeze may still prevent freeze-up
and boilover, but the chemicals that pre-
vent rust and corrosion are substantially
depleted after an average year's service.
To keep your cooling system in the
best condition, it should be cleaned out
with a product such as Prestone Super
Flush before a new supply of antifreeze/
coolant is added.
Flushing is a simple procedure, requir-

ing only a garden hose in addition to the
attachments supplied with a kit such as
the Prestone Flush 'N Fill Kit.
Flush entire system
The kit allows you to flush out your.
entire cooling system in about five min-
utes, leaving it clean and operating more
efficiently.
•
Refill Antifreeze/Coolant — To refi I I
the antifreeze/coolant, checi the capac-
ity of your cooling system in your own-
er's manual. Pour enough antifreeze into
your radiator for a 50 to 70 percent con-
centration (70 percent will provide max-
imum freezing protection' for cooler
weather).
Before replacing the radiator cap, run
the engine until it reaches a normal tem-
perature. Then turn off the engine, let it
cool about three minutes, and check the
coolant. level. Again. add more antifreeze
if necessary.
'Importance of periodic checks
Finally, remember to periodically check
your coolant level to ensure trouble-free
driving all winter.
Do you know what to look for in oil
by Paul Jacot
The prime purpose of an engine oil is to
lubricate. Motor oil prevents such moving
parts as cylinder walls, piston rings, bear-
ings, crankshafts, camshafts, valves, valve
guides and followers from rubbing together.
Oil helps stop engine corrosion and
rusting from condensation or from the acids
formed in the combustion chamber.
Lubricants keep the engine clean by preven-
ting contaminants from depositing on
engine parts. Oil also helps cool the engine.
Companies like Shell Canada continue to
test new oils to meet the demands of con-
sumers and the automotive industry.
One way a consumer can judge the quality
of an oil is to find the American Petroleum
Institute's designation on the can. The
gasoline engine oils of today are generally of
SF quality, the letter S indicates that it is of
service station quality.
These quality levels represent only '
minimum performance requirements. For
example, two SF quality oils may differ in
that one contains better additives than the
other, and therefore offers superior perfor-
mance. The oil formulation must determine
the required performance level.

In choosing a motor oil it is important to
be aware of viscosity, or the measure of an
oil's resistance to flow. Oil is graded for
viscosity at a range of temperatures..
Multigrade motor oils meet viscosity limits
at both temperature extremes.
A car owner's manual offers relevant in-
formation for the setetion of the viscosity -
grade of the motor oil to be used under dif-
ferent temperature ranges. To ensure the
best selection of the appropriate oil grade,
consult your local service station dealer.
