Faulty exhaust is an
automotive hazard
While automobile engines are running
cleaner and exhaust emissions have been
reduced significantly, one unseen killer
around every running engine is carbon
monoxide, warns the Car Care Council.
Often a driving danger that is easily
overlooked, carbon monoxide is an odor-
less, colorless gas that can kill an unsus-
pecting motorist in an idling car or closed
garage in a matter of minutes if the fumes
aren't -ventilated properly.
Two recent accidents attributed to car-
bon monoxide poisoning, one involving a
father and son and the other a 19 year old
youth, illustrate the importance of proper
ventilation when an engine is running,
particularly in a closed area.
Tragic consequences
The father and son spent the night in
their stranded auto after it became stuck in
a ditch. Periodically starting the car to stay
warm, the pair died after exhaust fumes
entered through holes in the floor. Police

added that due to the calm night with no
wind, the fumes couldn't disperse and
stayed close to the car.
Carbon monoxide poisoning was also
blamed in the death of a 19 year old youth
who was working in a closed garage with
the motor running. Exhaust fumes became
trapped in the garage after he closed the
door because of cold weather. He died
within five minutes.
The Car Care Council advises motorists
that a safety check-up should include an, in-
spection of the exhaust system for leaks
and the floor for holes. If your exhaust sys-
tem leaks, replace it. If the floor has rusted
through and there are holes, repair it.
Fresh air supply essential
An idling car can also be a killer. Never
leave the car running in a closed area
where the exhaust fumes can't escape. If
you must sit in a parked car that is idling,
always crack the window open to ensure a
fresh air supply.

solve problems
Within the past 12 to 18 months, a
number of new car problems have been
in the news. These problems have cen-
tered around the great strides forward in
automobile technology and great strides
backward in gasoline technology.
First, increases in engine octane re-
quirements have been occurring as automo-
bile manufacturers have been pressured
to find new ways to further improve fuel
economy.
Second, the combination of new fuel
injector technology and lower fuel qual-
ity has caused many new engines to ex-
perience loss of performance due to in-
jector clogging.
Finally, the removal of lead from gaso-
line is threatening autos designed to run
on leaded gasoline with catastrophic
valve seat wear.
When these problems occur, the solu-
tion is often expensive. Premium gaso-
line is !gore premium than ever, with cost
differei tials between premium and regu-
lar gasoline pushing 30 cents or more per
gallon in many cases.
Fuel injector clogging requires a visit
to the dealer or repair shop for a costly
injector cleaning service or, in some
cases, injector replacement.
A new approach to handling these
problems is the use of special chemicals
added to gasoline in the vehicle tank.
One company, Gold Eagle Co., of Chi-
cago, Illinois, has introduced a whole
new line of four do-it-yourself gasoline
additives called The QuantumSystem.
'Each of the four formulas is designed
to solve one of the problems mentioned
above. This problem -solving approach is
TODAY, AUTOMOBILES AND TRUCKS are more complicated, and gasolines and
diesel fuels have less additives to protect valves, increase octane and keep engines
clean. That is why the use of new technology fuel supplements such as this Quantum
Lead Replacement Formula or Quantum Fuel Injector Purging Formula from Gold
Eagle Company, Chicago, 11., are almost a necessity.
expected to be the new trend in gasoline
additives. The days of mystery are fading
away. Now gasoline additives are more
than just a wish acid a prayer.
With products like the Quantum Sys-
tem, auto DIYers can find the product
that solves their particular problem
instead of buying a general purpose gas
additive that may or may not help.
Also, these types of products are often
able to solve the problems of dirty fuel in;
jectors, power loss, hesitation, stalling,
surges, sluggishness, rough idle and lost
fuel economy with only one treatment.
Old gas additives had to be used with
every tankful to be fully effective, and
problems would persist for several tank-
fuls before the additive could help. The
new stronger additives work much more
quickly, and need not be used more than
once every two to three months.
