first victory
, by TD
The GDCI Senior Vikings put their first
win of the Huron -Perth Conference foot-
ball schedule on the board in Palmerston
last Thursday, defeating the Norwell
Redmen 35-12.
Running back Wayne Nivins scored all
five of the Vikings touchdowns. One came
on a spectacular 80 yard punt return. The
other four were on runs from inside the
five yard. line. Nivins gained 116 yards
rushing and also found time to play a little
defence and intercept two passes.
Greg Alcock successfully kicked con-
verts 'on all the Viking touchdowns.
The Viking offenceput together its most
consistent effort of the season, combining
good blocking by the line and hard running
and blocking by the backs. The Vikings
also passed for almost 100 yards. As a
result, the Vikes had many long offensive
drives.
Defensively, the Vikings also got a lot of
good performances, especially from their
five down linemen, Mark Stokes, Jim
••Bubba" Wright, Steve Hutchins, Byron
Bowman and Scott Glew. The Viking
defence held the Redmen to a total offence
of 104 yards, 56 yards rushing and 48 yards
passing. In addition to the two pass in-
terceptions, the Vikes caused and
recovered two fumbles.
The Vikings' punt return team really
came together in this game, with Nivins 80
yard TD run highlighting their effort. •
Several key blocks, especially one by
Jim Wright helped make that one succeed.
The Viking's have a chance to even their
season record at 2-2 and ensure a third
place finish in the league standings when
they play -their final game of the regular
schedule here Thursday afternoon against
the Listowel Lords.
