Sr. Vikings edge Stratford 66-;3
The. G.D.C.I. Senior Vikings have
established themselves firmly in first
place in Huron Perth girls basketball with
a 66-63 victory over arch rival Stratford
Northwestern Huskies in Stratford last
Thursday.
The Goderich girls, who were playing
without the services of starting point
guard Erin Robinson, who was sidelined
with a bruised knee, led the Huskies from
the beginning building a 37-28 half time
lead which they never lost. The Vikes led
by as much as 19 points in the second half
as they coasted to the victory.
It was a true team effort. Jenny Allen
played her best defensive game of the year
and scored 21 points. Captain Katharine
Murphy played a great two-way game
scoring 12 points. Rhonda Teal added 11
points and some key rebounds. Pam
Fritzley who filled in for Robinson played
an important part in the victory as she
scored nine points, rebounded and played
tenacious defense. The Stapleton girls,
captain Mary • Katherine and Mauredn
scored six and eight points respectively
but more important was their combined
defensive job on the Huskies' big center.
Earlier in the week the Vikings trounced
Seaforth 87-15 which leaves Goderich with
a 7-0 record. The scorers against Seaforth
were Jenny Allen, 22; Mary Katherine
Stapleton; 18; Katharine Murphy and
Rhonda Teal, 14; Erin Robinson, 7;
Maureen Stapleton, 6; Mary Jo Evans, 4;
and Pam Fritzley with 2.
The Vikings also won the Consolation
Championship at the Elgin Referees
Classic in St. Thomas last weekend. The
Goderich girls defeated Guelph Ross 50-41
in a thrilling come -from -behind overtime
game.
With 12 seconds left in regulation time
.and the score 42-40 for Guelph the Vikings
took a time out to set up a scoring play.
They then returned to the floor and ex-
ecuted the play perfectly with Jenny Allen
swishing the tying bucket with two seconds
left. The Goderich girls then took over the
three minute overtime ,putscoring Ross 8-0
to win the game.
The Vikings played an exceptional team
game led by Katharine Murphy, a tourna-
ment all-star, and Jenny Allen, the tourna-
ment's leading scorer. Murphy rebounded
exceptionally and triggered the Viking fast
break. Allen played great defensive and
scored 30 points in the final. Mary
Katherine Stapleton who was fouled out.
early in the fourth quarter added eight
points. Rhonda Teal scored four points in-
cluding a key basket in the overtime.
Maureen Stapleton added four points with
Katharine Murphy and Pam Fritzley scor-
ing a basket each.
In .the semifinal the Vikings downed
East Elgin 60-27. After taking a 37-7 half
time lead the Goderich girls coasted to the
victory.
Jenny Allen and Mary. Katherine
Stapleton scored 19 and 18 points respec-
tively. Pam, Fritzley added 7, Katharine
Murphy 6, Maureen Stapleton 4. Rhonda
Teal 4 and Krista Collinson 2.
The Vikings were tripped by a pesky
Tillsonburg team 42-33 in the opener. The
Tillsonburg girls took advantage of an
emotionally drained Viking team tNor-
thwestern the day before) and some er-
ratic officiating which saw the Gemini
score all ten of their fourth quarter points
from the foul line. Scoring for Goderich
were Allen 8, Stapleton M.K. - 8, Stapleton
M. - 7, Murphy 6, Teal 4, Fritzley 3.
The Vikings play South Huron on Tues-
day and St. Marys on Thursday this week.
I Jr. Vikings lose first game
of season --iii basketball action
by TD
The GDCI Vikings' undefeated string
has come to an end after six games of the
Huron Perth junior girls' basketball
schedule. Last Thursday in Stratford, the
Northwestern Huskies defeated the Vik-
ings 60-37. The Vikings went into that game
with a 6-0 record, following their 80-4
trouncing of the Seaforth Golden Bears
here last Tuesday.
The easy Win over, Seaforth did little to
prepare the Vikings for their game with
the Huskies who remain undefeated.
The Vikings got behind early in Strat-
ford, •and with Leslie Meyers and Kelly
Wade in foul trouble, they could not come
back. Wade managed to get nine points
and Sheri Hqrd hooped eight. Nicole
Miller, with six points, Meyers, with five,
and Jackie Banter, with four points, round-
ed out the Goderich attack.
Against Seaforth, the Vikings had 11
players hit the scoresheet. Nicole Miller,
with 18 points, Jackie Banter, with 15, and
Leslie Meyers, with 12, were Vikings in
double figures. Goderich led 45-0 at
halftime and outscored Seaforth 22-2 and
13-2 in the third and fourth quarters.
The Vikings take to the road this week
with games Tuesday in Exeter and Thurs-
day in St. Marys.

ATV season
to end Oct. 25
The 1987 ATV race season comes to an
end on October 25th as Hully Gully hosts
the Ontario TV Championships.
The riders have been hard at it all
season, and with this being the final race,
it will be a no holds barred battle to the
finish for all classes.
Top riders, Bill Whiteand Kris Hall from
Wyoming, Ont., are expected to take top
honours • in their respective classes but
first, they have to contend with the likes of
Steve Brulotte from Dorchester, and
Kevin Allen from Lambeth, bgth hot on the
trail.
Also scheduled, is a Mom's and Dad's
race at the conclusion of the day's events.
This is a hilarious conclusion to the season,
as the self-proclaimed pros take to the
