Now we have six additional Commodore 64's all equipped with disk drives and coloured monitors. Four of these 64's and the Pet have been purchased by school fund raising projects. The two remaining- C-64 setups have been supplied by the Huron County Board of Education. Along with the seven complete computer stations we also have five printers. The demand for computers still is much greater than the supply. Most teachers feel that there should be at least one computer for every classroom. An extra classroom lab of computers - with about thirty com- puters (one for every student in the class) is ' also a goal of many teachers who see the great possibilities computers can play in the education of elementary school :age children. I personally have seen pupils who have had great difficulty with hand-written seatwork, produce remarkable results on a computer. The computer is definitely one of the important tools of the present and future and we must prepare our children how to use them wisely. Although the provincial government has promised more financial support to get more computers in elemen- tary schools, this often takes time before these policies are put into practice. We need the communities continued support with our fund raising projects to increase the number -of computer stations now.. The computer has proven to be an important educational tool, but unless it is available on °a regular basis steady progress can- not be made by the pupils. The use of computers has changed greatly since 1982..Although we still use the com- puter for dull practice type activities, a greater variety of uses are being found for their use in the classroom. We have a few programs that help with art and music activities. Some classes have. used simple data bases where information has been stored on disk and then printed out in different forms. Very little work is done in the elementary school with programming in Basic like is done in' the highschool, but many pupils can learn many of the ideas and steps in programming by using a sam- ple language like "Logo". Pupils at an early public school age can write and correct and even illustrate interesting stories by using simple word processors like "Story Writer" and "Kid Writer" Utility programs like "The Print Shop" are used in our school to show pupils how computers can be very useful in making our work easier. This year Robertson School will have the Icons from the Board office in our school from Mar. 28 - April 22 and June 20-24. At this time 16 computers will be available to our school allowing whole classes to work on the computer at once. All the pupils in the school really enjoyed" the Icons when they were in the school Last year. The computer is only a machine. It is not the answer to all our problems. To use if ef- fectively we must learn to use it wisely. It has already made important contributions to strengthen the education of many of Robertson's pupils. More teachers are tak- ing courses in computers and using them -ourselves, resulting in more computer use in our school. With your continued support in this impor- tant endeavour, we will continue to make great progress.
