Welcome to Robertson Memorial Public School in Goderich. Come
in and see education in action.
Robertson supplement
a co-operative venture
The Signal -Star Supplement about Robertson is the result of a great deal of effort and
cooperation on the part of the Signal -Star Publishing Company, the Goderich Business
Community, and the staff and students of Robertson Memorial School.
The Signal -Star Publishing Company offered to R.M.P.S. in May the opportunity of
higher community profile in the form of a one-time news supplement to be included in a
regular weekly edition.
In early September, 1987, the business community was offered advertising in the sup-
plement at a slightly more attractive rate, a rate which would cover costs of printing at
Signal -Star as well as offer a small amount of money toward school fund raising. The
response in the business community was overwhelming when 95 small and large
businesses purchased advertising in the Robertson Right Up. All advertising was to be
prepared by the students themselves. All advertising was selected and approved by the
purchasing business. The finished ads appear as prepared by the students.
The response of the students at R.M.P.S. has been exciting as well. Students preparing
ads have become so involved in the process of advertising that recess goes by with no one
leaving a classroom to go outside. Students have prepared three and four ads, many of
which have to be completed at home and on weekends. It has truly been a lesson where
real life has been the teacher, rather than the teacher mimicking real life! Deadlines
have to be met! Basic requirements have to be present! Creativity and practicality must
•
be intermeshed!
The supplement is also made up of written articles, fictional and non -fictional. The
practical nature of writing for an audience is so demonstrable to the students, when they,
prepare an article for the paper. Students from all grades prepare rough drafts for their
orrect
written
teachers, who offer a. purpose now fod r the student. Final ections hi drafts are ence. All handed iects ofn to Mr.
written language have a. purpos
Herman or Mr. MacLennan for type -setting by the newspaper.
It has certainly been a busy and exciting two months at Robertson! To get a glimpse at
the business of newspaper printing and advertising has been fun and insightful. Thanks
to Don Hubick for his pointers on preparing ads, to Rob Bundy on cartooning, to the
Signal -Star photographers -for -photo lessons, and to Shirley Keller for her organizational
suggestions. It has really been a fun experience!
Thank you, Goderich businesses large and small, for your support and patronage. You
make our experience of teaching the children of the community so much easier and
better!
R.M.P.S. Staff
P.S. We also wish to express a huge thank you to the parent volunteers who spent a
tremendous amount of time contacting advertisers and returning to show samples and
have an ad approved. Thank you very much to Dorothy Venkiteswaran, Linda Dodds,
Pat Dicks, Nancy Switzer, Myra Henry and Libby McPherson.

Theme year
BY SHARON BROWN
The staff decided to focus the school year
at Robertson .1986-87, around the theme
"The School and the Community". There
were so many worthwhile topics to discuss
with this theme we are carrying it over to
this school year, 1987-88, as well.
Last fall we held a junior and senior
assembly to present the theme to the
students. A film was shown and Mr. Bob
Dempsey and Mr. Paul Carroll spoke to the
group about community spirit. Many of, the
environmental studies topics relate to this
theme so it was very easy to implement.
Some primary classes took visits to the
hospital, firehall, police station, library and
MacDonald's. We always discussed how the
community can help us as well as how these
people help the school. The V.I.P. program
in Grade 6 directly deals with student values
as community.p rticipants.. -
In the fall we hada Remembrance Day
walk to St. George's Church for aservice
there. The choir sang at the Mall and
stridents often go to Maitland Manor to pre-
sent programs.
On October 13 the Grade One class went to
public library to hear a storyteller,. Dan
Yashinsky.
