The Goderich Signal-Star, 1987-10-21, Page 9Festival of Faith weekend planned
Christmas, Good Friday, Easter and
Pentecost - all rolled into one, is an ac-
curate descriptionof the upcoming
Festival of Faith, planned by North Street
United Church on October 23, 24 and 25.
"We are trying to get the congregation to
look at what the whole Christian Faith is
all about," said Reverend Robert Ball, of
North Street United.
While the above mentioned occasions
celebrate important benchmarks on which
Christianity is based, Ball said many peo-
ple don't realize the combined impact
because they are spread throughout the
year.
"The whole experience is designed for
people to learn, in one weekend, the
essence of the Christion faith," said Ball of
the event which is open to all members of
the North Street congregation.
October may seem early for Christmas
carols, but the seasonal songs will be the
order of the evening Friday night, as the
Festival of Faith begins with a candlelight
carol service, beginning at. 7:30 p.m. A
family worship service will feature the
North Street Junior and Senior Choirs, as
RELIGION
well as children's activities, followed by a
Christmas reception and family dance
party.
A special guest preacher/teacher/story-
teller, Dr. Clifford Elliot, will also be
featured at all weekend events. Born in
Langham Sask., Elliott has served
pastorates and taught at religious colleges
in both Ontario and Western Canada. His
travels have included the Far East, Latin
America, Africa and China. He has vistied
Moscow, East Germany and Nicaragua on
peace missions .and to study ecumenical
relations and the church's involvement in
social and political concerns. Presently, he
writes a column for the Toronto Star and
the United Church Observer and has been
active in radio and television.
"Good Friday" will be celebrated Satur-
day night, with a teaching and reflecting
hour, special Good Friday music,
dramatic readings and visual art medita-
tion. Junior Congregation time with
Reverend Kathi Urbasik will also be held.
Sunday morning, "a full bore Easter
Service," will be held, said Reverend Ball,
featuring a "beefed up" choir about twice
the normal size with a sermon by Dr.
Elliott. Guest soloist will be John De
Jager.
At 5 p.m., a congregational supper will
be held, prior to the "Pentecost" celebra-
tion in the evening.
The Pentecost event will begin at 7 p.m.
with a lesson on the "Holy Spirit" by
Elliott, followed by a presentation by guest
Liturgical Dancer Louise Moorehouse.
Music will be provided by the North Street
Senior Choir and the Wesley -Willis Senior
Choir of Clinton, with Mary Hearn,
harpist.
The program will conclude with the
dedication of the week -end theme banner
presented to the church by.,, the North
Street United Church Women.
Ball expects the program . to be a
positive, learning experience for the entire
congregation.
"We're all kind of excited about this. We
feel it's going to be a good experience for
everyone," he said.
