H memaker Week helps raise profile
The Huron County Homemakers provide a
valuable service to the elderly of the county,
and as Homemaker Week in Huron County
was officially launched with the release of
helium -filled balloons, it served to illustrate
that the week is designed to elevate the pro-
file of the agency.
The week of Oct. 18-24 is Homemaker
Meek across Canada, a week set aside to br-
ing attention to the work of the
Homemakers, those dedicated individuals
who help make it possible for people to stay
in their homes longer.
Jean Ginn, a member of the board of
directors, said the week helps to raise the
profile of the agency and makes the public
more aware of its services.
"It's a week that honors the homemakers
too and we have over 200 now in Huron," she
said. "They help people stay at home longer
and there's more comfort there for them."
Estelle Wise of Town and Country
Homemakers, said the week also helps the
group with its fundraising efforts which is a
necessary part of the agency's activities.
"Some people simply can't afford the ser-
vice and we solicit church groups and
organizations in the area to help out with the
project," she explained.
The Town and Country Homemakers pro-
vide an essential service to many in Huron
County and if you would like more informa-
tion or would like to make a donation, write
to Box 969 or call 357-3222,

Goderich area woman finds Michigan balloon
What do leaves and a balloon have in
common?
Well, if you ask Marie Buchanan; of RR 6
Goderich, she would tell you she found one
while looking for the other Friday
afternoon.
"I was working outside when my hus-
band (Richard) came out and told me to
get in thecar and we would go for a drive
in the country. I decided it would be a good
idea and that I could get some leaves to
decorate the , hall for the bazaar (the
Catholic Women's League held a bazaar at
St. Peter's Parish Hall Saturday in
Goderich)," Mrs. Buchanan said.
As they were driving down the road, Mr.
Buchanan saw a balloon on the side of the
road.
I first thought it was a balloon from the
Town and Country Homemakers because I
had read a story about them releasing
balloons," Mrs. Buchanan said.
However, when they picked the pink
balloon up they noticed a red ribbon with a
note tied to the balloon.
The note read:
"Our school is participating in the Week-
ly Reader Writing Pals Balloon Contest.
Please put this message in an envelope
along with your name, address and
telephone number and the city and state in
which you found my message. Then mail
it to me at Angus School. Tellvnnrr local
paper that you ,heard from me. If you
write to me, I'll write back. Camille Ham -
mill P.10 Angus School, 3180 Hein Drive,
Sterling Heights, Michigan, 48310"
"It sure travelled a long way," Mrs.
Buchanan said.
She does plan to send a note to Camille
later this week. Along with the note, she
will enclose this story so Camille can see
what happened when Mrs. Buchanan
found the balloon.
"I have a soft spot for kids," mother,
dgrandmother and great-grandmother. "I
on't care is she answers but since a child
took the time to send the balloon, the least
I can do is answer it."
