County employment better than national average
from page 1
of the project members is what should be
done with that 7.1 per cent in trouble now.
There are a variety of reasons why these
people aren't employed, and the conunittee
has found for the most part they are either
lacking basic job skills, lack physical ac-
cess to work, are not aware of existing job
opportunities, need social service support
such as daycare, or lack basic job finding
skills such as how to conduct themselves at
an interview.
These problems are the types of things the
team addressed, and they did come up with
some ways to improve the situation.
AGENCIES IN PLACE
One thing project members think should
be taken into account when trying to solve
these problems are the agencies the govern-
ment already has in place to deal with these
types of problems. There are employment
agencies, the Board of Education, and
groups like Women Today that help people
get what they need to find a job.
"There are a lot of good things in place
already," says Mr. Seasons.
"People just don't know it's all there
because they don't have information about
it or access to it."
So the group simply recommends people
make better use of what they already have.
When an older man gets forced out of one
type of occupation he has to be retrained for
another one. If he doesn't have the
necessary education, everything is.
available to make sure hean get it.
One thing that did give the researchers a
bit more reason for concern was the fact the
number of people dropping out of school in
Huron County is higher than the national
average. To find out why this is the case
they are going to be conducting confidential
interviews with people who have dropped
out of school. They hope to get at least 50
volunteers to talcs tothem and give their
opinions.
The next stage 'for the SED project in
Huron County will be to design a program
that will give the specific groups .of
Part of the Severely Employment Disadvantaged Project ( SED I team was in Seaforth to.

Seasons and Doreen Strong. The researcltprs recently submitted a rough draft of their
report for review. (photo by Neil Corbett)
unemployed in the area what they need to
get jobs.
"This isn't going to be something that just
ends up under the sofa," says Mr. Seasons
of the group's study.
"In the long term, probably very long
term, we hope to have an ongoing response
to the structural changes in the economy."
Mr. Seasons predicts agriculture in Huron
County is going to neither expand nor slip in
the near future, but he does think growth
will occur in other areas of the Huron's
ec omy, namely the service sector.
13e ause the overall population of the county
aging the researchers believe there will
bin expansion in the services industry.
Therefore, more people should be prepared
for jobs in that sector of the economy.
