Christmas theme of Heritage Fair
Each year the Walkerton Heritage Fair
chooses a theme that can be emphasized,
and this year it's Christmas. With the holi-
day season coming just over six weeks
after the show, it's natural for people to be
thinking of Christmas. A number of ex-
hibits will feature creations for little folk:
mobiles, teddy bears, sheep and goats,
dolls' clothes, toys and wooden furniture
are all on view to make tiny eyes sparkle.
Christmas deccrations for the house as
well as tree ornaments are featured, and
two booths will make a specialty of these.
The hand crafted decorating items created
by Country Christmas Crafts will make
Christmas come alive. This display will be
complete with a full range of Christmas
decorations making use of calico prints
and muslin. Tree decorations, wreaths
dolls, table centres and tree skirts are all
being shown for the public's approval.
Ingrid O'Gorman is no stranger to the
Heritage Fair, having been a yearly
featured artist. Now Ingrid has added
hand painted tree ornaments to her ar-
tistic endeavours. The smooth glass balls
are all one of a kind because each one is in-
dividually sketched and painted. Each ball
has to be given a background, then the tiny
painting is put in place.
A new exhibit this year will introduce
Heritage Fair guests to Helen and Lottie's
handmade stoneware pottery. These will
incllyde distinctive and creative nativity
sets and also chess sets.
This year's show has over 30 art and
craft exhibitors, many of whom will be
showing uletide creations. The show will
be held in the Knights of Columbus Hall,
south of Walkerton on November 7 and 8.
Hike at Bannockburn Wildlife Area
Sunday, October 18 is the date for the an-
nual autumn hike at the Bannockburn
Wildlife Area. Don't miss this chance to en-
joy nature in its autumn finery of colored
leaves and crisp, fresh air.
"Bannockbun is a jewel of nature right in
Stanley Township and available to the
public year-round," says Gregory Pulham
of the Ausable Bayfield Conservation
Authority.
"The Ausable Bayfield Conservation
Authority hosts the hike so that more people
come to know Bannockburn and appreciate
the work that w.e do," he added.
According to Pulham, Bannockburn
Wildlife Area has a great variety of vegeta-
tion and topograpy. There are uplands of
mixed hardwoods, river valleys and
wetlands. The Ausable Bayfield Conserva-

tion Authority has planted evergreens and
shrubs to improve the habitat for wildlife.
To make the hiking trails more accessible
the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authori-
ty added a new footbridge over the Ban-
nockburn River in 1986. This year is under-
way to extend the boardwalk.
The hot apple cider which is served by the
Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority is
a tradition at the Bannockburn hike. •
The nature trail is about 2.4 km long and
the hike takes about one hour. You are ad-
vised to dress for the outdoors and to wear
sturdy, water-resistant footwear.
The hike will occur from 2 to 4 p.m. The
Bannockburn,Wildlife Area is located 4 km
west Of Brucefield, north off Huron County
Road 3. Look for the hike signs between
Varna and Brucefield.
Organizations receive grants
The Paul Demers Orchestra of Ottawa
was heard in France this past summer, the
Venture Drum Corps of Kitchener perform-
ed on the grounds of the Whitehouse in
Washington, D.C., and Northern Ontario
students from Marathon, South Porcupine
and Smooth Rock Falls will travel to
Southern Ontario to attend theatre perfor-
mances. These are just a few of the projects
made possible with help from the Ministry
of Culture and Communications, Minister
Lily Munro announced recently.
"Participation in the international
marketplace of the arts is essential to the
achievement of excellence," she said. "Ex-
posure to these audiences builds confidence
and brings artists into contact with new
ideas."
Ninety-four arts organizations throughout
Ontario received grants totalling $458,161.
Funds were awarded for a wide variety of
projects including the purchase of com-
puterized equipment, hiring of student in-
terns, attending professional conferences
and producing new works.
Locally, the Blyth Centre for the Arts
received $10,000 to help with the develop-
ment of the Vision of Arts project.
"The activities of arts organizations in a
community help build bridges between
cultures and between individuals who might
not otherwise have the opportunity to
meet," the Minister continued. "By in-
vesting in the arts we invest in the quality of
our life in this province."
