It all started here in 1947 on charter night May 15, The British Exchange Hotel where the Goderich Kinsmen Club was chartered in 1947 is long gone ... but the Kinsmen Club lives on. On charter night, more than 100 were present at a sit-down dinner and an im- pressive ceremony in which Mayor D.D.Mooney extended an official welcome to the new club. Mayor Mooney pointed out that the club stood for community service and had a fine reputation across the country. Jack Coates, president of the Goderich Lions club, said there were many oppor- tunities for service in the lakeport town. Also present was J.K. Hunter, president of the Goderich branch of the Canadian Legion. Jerry Knechtel of Hanover, a past na- tional president of Kinsmen, presented R.H. Cornish, president of the Goderich Kinsmen Club, with the charter. Ed Freeland of Fort Erie, governor of district 1 extended a welcome to the Goderich club. Installation of officers was conducted by Banty Bantick of Toronto, general secretary of Kinsmen, who, was also the guest speaker. Officers were: R.H.Cornish, president; F.Skelton, vice-president; W. McGrath, secretary; S.H.Shenton, treasurer; D.J.Patterson, W.Ross and G. Bannister, directors. Charter members were S.Carter, R. Bellamy, W. Larder, W.Westbrook, J. Whaley, K. Pennington, J.B.Macdonald, B.R.Rotiinson, K. Aitken, C. Bridgewater, N. Easterbrook, J.L. Lee, E.W.MacLeod, C. Larder, R. Nelson, J.A.Linfield, R.Bentley and B.A.Sully. Other special guests included H.W.Mc- Clatchey, president of the sponsoring Stratford Kinsmen Club who presented a gavel to the new club and "Pop" Rogers, father of founder Hal Rogers, who had a summer home at Bayfield forears.. Visitors were present from don, Kit- chener, Waterloo, Hanover, Chesley, Strat- ford, Kincardine, Woodstock, St. Catharines, Hamilton, Chatham and Fort Erie.
