Decisions made at the meeting included: The commission, in response to a letter from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 109 Goderich. concerning Remembrance Day Services, the commission made mo- tion to purchase a cross for the annual service. In response to a letter sent to the PUC by town council concerning an easement on Eldon Street (located between lots 26-27), the ..commission 'was informed that neighbors wished to purchase the land. The PUC commission motioned to request the town keep the area for an easement if the lot was sold. A letter sent to the Goderich PUC by the Municipal Electrical Associatin (MEA) requested nominations of people willing to sit on an MEA committee. Commissioner Don McMillan was nominated for a second year on the accounting and administrative committee while commissioner Jim Peters asked to let his nomination lapse for the public relations committee since he has since been elected to a director's posi- tion for District 6. The Goderich PUC `received a letter from the Leamington PUC asking the com- mission if they would be interested in hosting the 1988 Ontario Municipal Water Association Western Section Annual Meeting next fall. The Leamington PUC was to host the meeting but they would like to host it in 1990 when one of their commis- sioners becomes Section President in 1990. Locally, PUC chairman Ben Sheardown is also the chairman of the OMWA Western Public utilities commissioners as well as management personnel were recognized for long service at the recent Municipal Electrical Association District Six annual meeting held in Goderich. Included among the 29 awards handed out were four for the Goderich PUC. Receiving long service awards were to PUC manager Evert Middel (25 years), PUC com- missioner Dr. Jim Peters (10 years), PUC chairman Ben Sheardown (10 years) and PUC commissioner Herb Murphy (10 years). The Goderich PUC decided to host the fall meeting, which will see between 100-150 delegates attending the one -day meeting in Goderich. In his report, PUC Manager Evert Mid - del discussed electric water heater ren- tals, gave a report on 1987 conferences and seminars attended by PUC staff, as well as a tour of the Goderich Water Treatment Plant. The commissioners were given a report of the number and cost of electric water heater rentals in Goderich to date. It was noted that currently 16 water heaters were out on a mental basis with the average cost of installation running about $150. However, the commissioners did note the installation costs did vary somewhat with one installation being double the average price. The commissioners were made aware that the PUC inspected. each rental unit after it was installed. The commis- sioners decided they would like another report on the number of rental - water heaters and cost of installation early in 1988 and then later in the spring before making any decisions regarding the costs. Middel noted there should be 24 water heaters installed in Goderich homes. by the,. new year. The commissioners received•a report on time and expenses accumulated by out of. the office activities. The report was com- pleted in response to a request by Mayor Eileen Palmer who wanted "to try and get a handle on the number ,of manhours sacrificed each year on outside activities." While she noted that members should at- tend only a spring or fall meeting ( one meeting a year) since "there can't be that much innovation in six months", commis- -sioner Don McMillan noted "It's good for their morale to get away. It gives you a lift and that's something perhaps we underestimate." Mutilating newsmagazine not unusal for Martha Martha Rathburn When do you throw out the papers? When for Focus? Here, Focus gets read and re- read, there's always something I've missed. This morning's Focus — or what was left of it — was getting the heave-ho. I had ripped out, cut out and in general mutilated that news magazine — hated to do it, but something had to give. One . question for Rob Bundy — on your page of hand pictures in the Aug. 4 Focus, what is in the hand acid what is he or she do- ing in the bottom right hand picture? Your work is very nice Rob and I could see the ti- tle of the book held in the hand above that lower picture. The book is by Herriott, "All Creatures Great and Small". Tho those who have not read this book, run, don't walk to the nearest book store or Library. You'll love it and Herriott has others you'll enjoy, believe me. Quite a number of years ago we lived in a great big old house. I loved it. After many wonderful years when the kids could, come home with their kids and how they enjoyed it, the house too, loved it. Later, I know, we were reduced ti three people in tht big house. The children had grown, had their own interests and friends, so they weren't coming to the big house very often unless it was with a wife or hubby or new baby — busy, busy people now. This was one family. My mother' had lived with us after Dad died and the house was to big for her and she had difficulty getting around, especially , 'climbing the stairs was very hard with crut- ches. So, we decided to sell it. I didn't want to but finally we sold it to the doctor who had the largest 'family. That house was made for a very large family and this was why I turned down a nice doctor and his wife and two wee girls (or was it three. ) We looked around, nothing suited us. We. decided to wait and rented the bottom floor of what had been the `Nurses Residence'.;. We were only there a couple of months when we found a house on Nairn Drive. One big reason for a quick move, my,introducti•on to some creepy crawlers that looked very fierce and walked in under the door by the dozens. If I had just seen some of these in another part of the house I wouldn't have been so surprised but this door and entrance was.off to one side and was just that — an en- trance and exit. I went to the door to lock it when I noticed movement at the bottom of the door. Little brown things ... dozens of them coming in under the door. I didn't know there was a space there. I started stepping on them but more and more mar- ched in. I ran for the broom, swept them out and ran for some papers to stuff undre that door. There was another invasion by the time I got back and I was fit to be tied. I swept all TLI2V MY L1211 S U MUG4a0LI©i presents . What a site. What were they? Well, I didn't get much sleep that night and the next day went over to my neighbour behind us. She laughed at my ex- citement and we went outside where she showed that anything lying, flat on the ground sheltered those fierce looking ear- wigs with their backend pincers. She con- vinced me that they could get into the house by any crack or crevice. I wasn't soothed by "They won't hurt you." People in the area of Lumber 111 knew these little varmits, pests — I can think of other names. They were gradual'.y taking oven' the whole town and by now I expect they have ... 20 years later. I found the only thing outside .of boiling water that will kill these useless bugs is 'Sevin' a powerful powder that you carefully spread around. Back in 1969-70, I had written to the Department of Agriculture and others to see if they could do anything for the town. I received a couple of leaflets on the subject. I got to know a lot about them — they eat plant and animal food etc and damage the gardens. They were first known about 1938. I would like to know if anything has ever been done to get rid of them.
