GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1987—PAGE 9
Knights of Columbus
A homeowned by Ray Young, of Goderich, was moved Friday mor-
ning from its previous location on Bayfield Road (near the Bedford
Arms Hotel) to its new location on MacDonald Street across from
the Goderich Arena. The move, assisted by the GoderichfiPUC and
town police, was to originally have been a simple jaunt from
Bayfield Road, down Blake Street and up MacDonald Street,
however the house was loaded to high on the trailer for the wires
that crossed the roads so an alternate route was taken. The new
route consisted of travelling down Bayfield Road, turning right on
Suncoast Drive, right on South Street to Blake Street and up Mac-
Donald. PUC workers rode on top of the house to lift wires over the
roof and chimney. The move took most of the day to complete.

True Canadian hero, Murray McLauchlan,
to entertain in Goderich this weekend
By Rob Bundy
Murray Mclauchlan is one of a rare
breed. Like Gordon Lightfoot or Anne Mur-
ray, McLauchlan is a true Canadian hero
and there just aren't that many of them.
McLauchlan is an adventurer, a
dreamer, a talented songwriter and a
superb showman. You need only see one of
his concerts to discover that this soft -
spoken performer really does have
something to say about our great country
and that he says it with unique style.
"Canadian music is alive and well" said
McLauchlan in a recent phone interview
from his Toilonto home, "but sometimes
you just have to look for it in the right
places.''
The right place this week is at the Livery
Theatre in Goderich as McLauchlan br-
ings his show to town. The show, which will
' feature McI auchlan backed by two other
Canadian kik artists, Kitt Johnston and
Danny Greenspot, goes Sunday, October 18
at 8 p.m. Tickets for the concert are still
available from Campbell's, -The Enter-
tainer, Sam's and the Recreation Office.
Since his first album, 'Song From .the
Street', released in 1971, to his latest offer-
ing, `Midnight Break', McLauchlan has
consistantly provided his ever growing au-
dience with songs from the heart. Over the
years, he has been honored with seven
"Juno Awards.
"My music is best described as kids
songs for adults," says McLauchlan. "I'd
like to think the music points out modes of
human behavior in a natural state. Rock
has'whistles and bells, but folk music plugs
along naturally. It's something everyone
can relate to. At least, I hope it is."
Besides touring' Canada from coast to
coast almost every year, McLauchlan also
produces his own albums and takes a
month or two between tours to write his
songs. Two years ago his TV special
"Floating Over Canada" was featured on
CBC and following its great success, he
has plans to try a similar project again...if
time allows.
"I really enjoyed working on
`Floating'," says McLauchlan, "and was
happy to see it was so well received. As for
new projects, I have a few things in the fire
right now but they're just ideas at this
point. I'm a songwriter first and that's
what I really want to do."
While "Floating Over Canada" was a
success in this'country, it was also a sur-
prise success in the Far East. CBC sold the
program to China and it was just as big a
hit there.
"I've never sold a record in China,"
muses McLauchlan, "but 200 million
Chinese have seen me floating over
Canada."
His list of hit songs is as long as his coun
-try--is--wide:- He-w'on--the-Composer=of--the-
Year award in 1973 for `Farmer's Song', he
touched hearts with `Whispering Rain' in
1979 and in 1981, his song `If The Wind
Could Blow My Troubles Away' was
chosen by the International Year of
Disabled Persons as their worldwide
theme song. While writing and producing
records takes much of his time,
McLauchlan says he loves performing in
front of an audience best.
"I'll never get tired of touring," he says.
"It's important for any artist to get feed-
back and the belt watto do that is get out
and -sing -;for` p!eI
Besides` t11e1' of ost :'t9hterwill see
McLauchlan p 'y Har'r'iston on the 16th
and Blyth on , e 17th before taking in
Goderich on S day, he will soon embark
on a tour whicljwill take the show to Alber-
ta and the Ndrthwest Territories. From
there it's off to Australia where
McLauchlan is realizing a growing
popularity.
As a great Canadian songwriter, Murray
McLauchlan 1}as what it takes and shows
no signs of letting up. He has a new album
in the works and his intimate perfor-
mances lend themselves perfectly to
creating the type of audience he thrives
on...real folks.
"I'm not trying to bring about world
peace with my shows but you can bet it's
good value fdr your entertainment buck."
Don't miss Murray McLauchlan this
weekend. It's not often we get to see .a real
live Canadian folk hero.
Steps planned to alleviate water problems
Goderich town council will take steps to
alleviate some of the water problems in
the town's Industrial Park by establishing
a reserve fund to be used for storm sewer
construction.
Council passed bylaw 104 Oct. 5, enabl-
ing the town to establish a fund that will
commit 50 per cent of the sale price of in-
dustrial land to an account to be used for
constructions of sewers at a later date.
In a repfort to council, administrator
Larry McCabe said the' matter was
brought to council's attention in 1978 via a
report which indicated that expenditures
would have to be undertaken to alleviate a
water problem in the industrial park. He
said the present-day value of the work re-
quired would be in excess of $2 million.
The bylaw means council has establish-
ed two reserves, one for future storm
sewer work and another for land develop-
ment costs as in the case of the construc-
tion of MacEwan Street.
The town has completed some necessary
ditching work ill the area to alleviate some
water problems, but eventually hopes to

Councillor Bill Clifford said the reserve

growth."
Councillor Jim Searls suggested the in-
terest from the Pollution Control Fund
reserve should be used. McCabe said the
money from the surcharge, used to com-
plete sewage plant improvements, has
since been used to complete sidewalk and
sewer work.
