GM represents 48 per cent of the car market in the USA and Canada, so they must be do- ing something right. We're saying to other people, look, people own these cars for years. There has to be a reason for this'," Gregg said. CHOOSING GODERICH Jackie Saffer, producer for Saffer Advertising, said the agency began scouting Ontario for filming locations when they were awarded the contract. "We had to try and show Ontario, both the rural and urban aspects and how GM is everywhere," she said. Goderich was selected as a site for film- ing due, in part, to Gregg's suggestions. Gregg suggested Goderich since it was a community that had two established GM dealerships (McGee's and Jim Hayter's Chev-Olds ). "I thought to myself that there's no bet- ter looking dealerships than Goderich's. McGee's is very beautiful to look at and the building has been here for at least 55 years," Gregg said. Prior to filming in Goderich, the crews were at the GM dealership in St. Mary's as well as filming in Toronto. While most of the filming in Goderich was done at the dealerships, some shots at St. Christopher's Beach and near a farm - shouse on a Goderich Township sideroad were planned. However, Wednesday's weather forced outdoor shots at the dealer- ship and other locations to be cancelled. Although :some Toronto actors were brought.in for filming,,.the agency and film crew did use .. some local talent. At McGee's, Don Duench, Mike Clark, Ed Mundle and Pat Bruxer were kept busy Wednesday filming scenes. While the scenes were planned and detailed prior to arriving'here, .rast minute changes were not to be unexpected from the 22 member Partners crew and the four advertising representatives. Just as the production crew finished set- ting up one scene at, noon Wednesday, Director -Cameraman Larry Hutson rush- ed in saying he didn't want to use the area and had found a better place where he could shoot three or four different scenes. Although scenes are . usually detailed, some unusual.things can happen to add to the scene. For example, a Saffer Advertis- ing representative said the crew had been filming a scene at a church earlier in the week and while the couple came down the steps towards their car, the church bells began to peal. In another shot, a group of schoolchildren marched through a corner of the scene. The crew decided to leave it in the shot because it added a bit of reality to the scene: PARDON OUR DUST! (photos by Lou -Ann DeBruyn) It was noted that it took anywhere from one to four hours to set up a scene and that usually four or five scenes were filmed each day. Both Saffer and Gregg noted the McGee or Hayter dealerships would not be iden- tified in the commercials. CATCHY LYRICS Aside from the newly -designed posters, which are already appearing in GM dealership windows, the television, radio and newspaper campaign also has a specially written song. The lyrics and words were co -written by Gregg and Saf- fer Advertising Writer Bryan Colleran. The as -yet .unreleased song follows the new campaign in promoting the entire dealership and not a specific automobile. It is a catchy, attention -getting song, some of the lines of which are: "We're with you a'I together .... Through all the years we'll b right here for you." Gregg identified it as a rallying cry for the Ontario GM dealerships. "It's a rallying cry for the GM dealers of Ontario to get behind. We're out to capture the soul, the hearts and the wallets of On- tario," he said.
