Colborne elects students council The year is well underway. at Colborne Central School. The staff and student body would like to welcome Mrs. Mary Anne Rea to our school. We hope that she will enjoy her stay with us. Mrs. Rea, who is coming to assume Mr. Brereton's position on staff, is teaching the grade 2/3 class. Student Council elections took. place on Friday. Alt elecutive positions were con- tested. Chris Marchl & Rose -Marie Young ran for the position of treasurer. Jackie Vanstone and Terri -Lynne Wagner ran for the position of secretary. Angie Clarke and Meighan Wark sought the vice-presidents position and the position of president ap- pealed "to Victor Bond, Brett Harman and Michelle Haasnoot. After a week of very serious campaigning the executive that was elected included Brett Harman, Meighan Wark, Jackie Vanstone and Chris March. With their able leadership, 1987/88 should be a great year. On Friday afternoon the members of an antique car club from Michigan, who were dining at Benmiller,'drove their pre -World War 1 vehicles around the school. The children were fascinated by these vintage automobiles. The children in grades 5, 6, 7 & 8 will be selling Hallowe'en potato chips during the next week or so. Profits from the chip sales will be put toward our Adventure Playground project. An Open -House -Meet the Teachers Night was held on Wednesday evening from 7-8:30. It was good to see so many interested parents. On Wednesday, Oct. 7 we are hoping to have a meeting at the school to discuss the viability of a Parent/teacher group to head up our Playground project. It is hoped that the formation of such a group will allow us to access the maximum amount of support from the community in order to guarantee the success of this project. Victoria gets new French room Victoria Public School held Open House on Thursday, October L It was good to see so tetany people in attendance. Students and teachers put a lot of hard ,work into putting everything together for visitors. We are really proud of our new French room and we know Madame Hogan will enjoy having her own spot. Thanks to all who made our Open House a success. On Tuesday, October 6, Victoria School will host the Junior Soccer Tournament. Teams from Brookside, Colborne, Holmesville, Robertson and Victoria will participate. The boys team is coached by Mr. Yeo and the Victoria girls team is coached by Mme. Mogan. Both teams have been practising very hard and hope to win a pennant for their efforts. Good luck to all teams involved. Hunt. Haggle and Barter at the Mexican VICTORIA VIEWPOINT market day this Wednesday in Room 202. Mrs. Hesk's grade six class will be raising money for their Mexican dinner. Don't forget your pesos. This week at Victoria, the school fundrais- ing committee is sponsoring two events. Thursday, October 8 there will be a skate ex- change in the gym from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Skates are to be labelled with price, name, address and phone number. The school will add $1 to help support student activities. Friday, October 9 at noon hour will be Hot Dog Day. For a $1 ticket pupils will receive a hot dog, a drink and an apple. Dungannon 4H club meets The Dungannon 4-1-1 club held its first and second meetings on Monday, Sept. 21. They were held at the home of MaryAnn Brindley. This club is "A Taste of Ontario Fruits and Vegetables". There were 14 members present for the meeting. The leaders for this club are Joanne Spro- wle and MaryAnn Brindley. Officers were chosen as follows: Debbie Nivens (presi- dent), Joel Wright (vice-president), Karen Bakker (treasurer), Tracy Chambers (press reporter). The secretary's position will be rotated among the members. The next meeting will be held Sept. 28. Students learn cartooning • from page 13A that drivers will remember that we are little and sometimes forget our safety rules but we are trying. GRADE5 The Grade Five's have been studying dif- ferent plant families in science. Many of the pupils were surprised to find that corn and bamboo were members of the grass family. In computer class the grade five's are learn- ing the comuter using a language called Logo. By using simple commands they cell move the turtle around the screen to draw many interesting designs. GRADE2 Dinosaurmania has left its footprints in Room 6. From Dinosaur eggs to dinosaur dinner from the Pipecleanosaurus to Tyran- nosaurus Rex, Dinosaur Friends are found everywhere in Grade 2. VOLLEYBALL The intramural volleyball program is well underway, and already some teams are ex- hibitting definite strengths.In the Gr. 7 league, playing on odd days, Pellow's Fellows, under the capable leadership of Sean Pellow and Krista Glenn, have yet to lose a game. In the Gr. 8 league, the Raiders, captained by Mark Phillips and Christina Melick, ap- pear to be the team to beat. Everyone is en- joying the action, and skills are definitely improving. 7C 7C is very involved in learning about North America Native Peoples, they are studying the various groups in history. In Language Arts they are reading, cartoon- ing, their interpretations of legends, and are writing their own legends based on the characters on the totem poles which they make in Art Class.
