Jr. girls stay
undefeated
in H -P play
BY T.D.
The GDCI Vikings are undefeated in
Huron -Perth Conference junior girls
basketball play, with a record of 3- 0
following victories last • week over
Wingham and Mitchell.
Monday, at home, the Vikings full court
pressure was too much 'for Wingham
Madill. The Vikings forced turnovers and
did not allow Wingham to set up their of-
fence enroute to a 47-23 victory over
Madill.
Kelly Wade and Nicole Miller had 10
points apiece for Goderich. Anne Marie
Bedard added eight and Leslie Meyers
threw in seven for the winners. Julie
Pentland and Sheri Hord each had four
points. S. Askes had 10 points for Madill.
In Mitchell Wednesday, the Vikings
again pressed early and led 21-8 after the
first half. Mitchell mounted a third quarter
comeback against the Vikings' second
team, outscoring Goderich 20-12, but when
coach Lynn Meyers put his starters back
in in the fourth quarter, the Vikes
outscored Mitchell 15-4 to make the final
tally 48-32.
The quickness of Leslie Meyers, Nicole
Miller and Julie Pentland and the reboun-
ding of Anne Marie Bedard and Kelly
Wade accounted for much of the Vikings'
succes.
Leslie Meyers ,led the scoring with 12
points, Nicole Miller had 10 and Kelly
Wade and Anne Marie Bedard had nine
points apiece to pace the Goderich attack.
Yesterday (Tuesday) the Vikings played
in Listowel. Tomorrow (Thursday) they
play host to Norwell.
In a tournament played here Saturday,
the junior Vikings gave a good account gf
themselves, reaching the consolation
finals.
In their first game, the Vikings lost 51-37
to the eventual champions, London Ban -
"ting. The Vikings then defeatecr Sarnia St.
Clair 49-24 in the consolation semi-final,
but in the final they lost 34-32 at the -buzzer
to Stratford Central.
London Banting won the championship
final 42-27 over John Paul of London.
Coach Lynn Meyers was pleased with
the enthusiastic and determined play of his
Vikings. Julie Pentland's improved play
and Nicole Miller's offensive skills and the
talents of Julie Meyers contributed to the
Vikings play. Kelly Wade provides the
strength of the team's rebounding and
poses an offensive threat as well, while
Anne Marie Bedard plays spirited defence
and Jackie Banter and Sheri Hord give
good support. Leslie Meyers was chosen to
the tournament all-star team.
