TANNING SPA Service Clubs Legion celebrating 60 years of service Goderich Legion Branch 109 received its charter on November 8, 1927. This year on November 11 Legion Branch 109 will com- mence the celebration of sixty years of ser- vice to the Legion comrades, the country and the community, by conducting Exer- cise Br. 109 Jubilee 60, Following the service of Remembrance on November 11 of this year Branch 109 will literally launch its Diamond Jubilee celebrations with the liberation of a bevy of blue and gold I the Legion colours ) balloons into the sky above the Legion hall. As remembrance is the prime reason for the existence of the Royal Canadian Legion it is only proper that November 11 mark the commencement of Exercise Br. 109 Jubilee 60. The Branch, on this date, will also welcome the return of our recent- ly retired Branch Padre, the Rev. G. Lockhart Royal, as he comes back to Branch 109 for this day to conduct the ser- vice at the cenotaph. It is on Remem- brance Day that the members of the Legion and our community do not forget that 68,000 young Canadian lads gave their lives during World War I. We also do not forget that 45,000 young Canadians (8,000 with no known grave I gave their lives that we may live in a nation where life today is based on freedom, honour and justice for all. The master plan of attack on our 60th birthday celebrations will be to stage one or more events at Branch 109 each month from November 11, 1987 until November 11, 1988. This full scale campaign of Legion celebration will allow the Branch birthday committee led by our First Vice President Stanley Profit to involve every age group within the branch and the community. Some of these events are special, some are part of our normal Legion year. On Saturday, November 14, 1987 Legion Branch 109 will hold its Diamond (60thI Jubilee dinner and dance. The guest speaker will be the First Vice President of the Dominion Command of the Royal Canadian Legion, Gaston Garceau. Many past presidents will be in attendance, some who have left Goderich since serving as a president of Branch 109. Tickets for this dinner -dance will be on sale as of Friday, Oct. 9 at the Branch canteen and are pric- ed -at $1.5 per•person: You are-ad"wised as a - member of the Branch to secure your tickets early as space in the Jubilee room is limited. A preference for tickets will be given to all Branch 109 members and spouses or escorts are most welcome. On December 19 the Branch will hold its Jubilee 60 Xmas -Draw -.dance. The Branch will commence the year 1988 with a New Year's Levee at which time all municipal officials, from our town, townships and county will be special guests of the Branch as well as members of our Branch and the community. 'The Branch has scheduled a Nostalgia Night for the evening of January 15, 1988. Legion Branch 109 will be the scene of the Greater Branch 109 (open to all Branch and Auxiliary members) .Dart Tourna- ment in the Jubilee room. A special Honours and Awards Night and Dance will take place at Branch 109 on Saturday, March 5, 1988. For the youngsters of our community the Branch will sponsor a kite flying contest tentative- ly set for March 12 or the first windy Satur- day or Sunday in that month. On Saturday, April 9, the actual date of the 70th anniversary of the now famous Battle of Vimy Ridge, the Branch will hold its annual Vimy Memorial Banquet when all war veterans who are sixty-five years old or older will be the honoured guests of Branch 109. A special speaker will be an- nounced later. On Saturday, May 7, the actual date of the end of World War II, not the official day May 8, our Branch will stage the "109 Revue", a show of song and skits in the Jubilee Room and patterned after the Canadian army stage shows of World War II. - In June of 1988 we will hold the Greater Branch 109 ( open to all Legion members Duffer's Two -Ball Golf Tournament. Exer- cise Br. 109 Jubilee 60 calls for an extended celebration of Canada Day 1988 at Branch 109. In September, the Bram 1. ;11 remember our fallen with a Legion Drumhead Memorial Service in Court House Park. This parade will be similar to' that held on the 15th of September 1985 when the Diamond Jubilee of the Royal Canadian Legion across Canada was held. October 1988 will see the awarding of certificates to those Branch and communi- ty members who complete the 109 Walk Challenge of 109 kilometres or miles, the. unit of measure being decided by the com- petitor when he or she signs up for this walk between February 15 and March 1,. 1988. Friday, November 11, 1988 we of Branch; 109 will hold a ceremony to officially seal the Branch 109 time capsule and secure it in the display cabinet in the canteen. A booklet "A Portrait of a Branch - the; History of Legion Branch 109" will then be put on sale to the members and communi- ty. This day will also be the final day to of- ficially purchase an especially designed Branch 109 60th Legion lapel pin as a. memento of the year of Exercise Br. 109, Jubilee 60. Further details as to the actual time, confirmed date and location of each of the happenings which make up the Diamond, Jubilee celebration of Goderich Branch 109: of the Royal Canadian Legion will be an nounced in sufficient time in the Branch 109 bulletin and the Signal -Star that all will be aware of each event, taking place from. November 1987 to November 1988. Kinsmen and Kinette clubs win Ontario March of Dimes awards The Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs of Ontario have won the service club award from the Ontario March of Dimes award for their fund-raising efforts during the Ontario March of Dimes Ability Fund Campaign. ' "Over the past year, one service club stands out for its outstanding support of the Ontario March of Dimes, both financially and. as a source of volunteers," said Tony Ruprecht, M.P.P., Ontario's Minister Responsible for Disabled Persons, •Ruprecht in- announcing- the- award at the Ontario-. March of Dimes Annual Meeting,at the Con- stellation Hotel in Toronto Sept. 18. "Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs which ran an Ability Fund Campaign raised in excess of $50,000 for the Ontario March of Dimes in KINSMEN 1987," Ruprecht said. Robert Elliot of Toronto, the Ekecutive Director of the Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs of Ontario, accepted the award on behalf of all Ontario Kinsmen and Kinettes. Founded in. 1951, the Ontario March of Dimes-- today_of£ers-_ services_ to disabled adults, ranging from vocational rehabilita- tion to job placement, attendant care, assistive devices such as wheelchairs and braces, and advocacy for the rights of disabled persons.
