Co mmunit Compiex proposal News • from page 1 Councillor Stan Profit said council faced tough decisions in providing hard services for the citizens, claiming it had to "juggle grants and money." He said that financing a complex would just/ be another juggling act and a difficult decision to commit the taxpayers to. Councillor Peter McCauley said he had hoped the committee would bring a workable proposal for around $2.4 million. He later introduced a motion asking that the matter be referred to council's ad- ministrative committee for further study. It also asked for the administrator, Larry McCabe, to prepare cost figures. The motion was lost on a tied vote with Worsell, Searls, Clifford and Doherty voting against it. Profit, Stringer, Mc- Cauley and Mayor Eileen Palmer voted in favor of sending the report to committee for study. While Dr. Neal indicated the financial and moral support for the complex was much in" evidence, Clifford, wondered about the type of people who responded if favor of the complex in the survey. "I wonder if the same question was asked of all the dear little old ladies out there, if there would be a different response?" "There's no doubt that some people are not interested, but enough of a concur- rence exists to take the next step and put the question to the people," Dr. Neal said. "There is a high rate of seniors here and a large percentage are interested: The elderly were targeted in the study for recreational needs and the strongest in- terest was expressed in the pool and whirlpool. _ "If you look at the specifics of who pays, a lot of people are willing to pay for im- provements to the quality of life. It's wor- thy of looking at further." Mayor Palmer argued that the fact there was evidence of support suggested council should take a further look. "Council was elected to decide for the taxpayers on issues," she said. "The fact a majority of industries are in favor sug-. gests further research is required. There should be no commitment, nor should the report be put on the shelf. All the facts sliould Fie on-th Tit/[ Tief`oi.e a :final deci=- sion is made. After the motion calling for further study was defeated, Searls introduced a motion calling for the report to be received with no action taken, It was lost in a 4-4 vote again. Mayor Palmer thanked Dr. Neal and his committee for its work. "The funding makes us apprehensive but if you wish anytime to come back, we would be happy to receive"you." Dr. Neal thanked council for receiving the report and giving it "careful consideration." The Acquatic Centre Committee, which held 11 meetings, was comprised of; Dr. Neal, Don Ethelston, Teresa Feagan, Dawn Toombs, Matthew Pearson, Bob' Woodall, Ken Englestad, Bert Such, Elsa Haydon and Jane' Netzke. ** ***** +.444 Sale Ends October 31st, 1987 150 The Square, Goderich 524-8600 A. 8, C. The drawing shows that a liesure pool is the major component of the complex while other proposed features included raquet ball and squash courts, exercise and fitness rooms, kitchen facilitiesand meeting rooms. The estimated cost was $3.6 million in 1987 figures. The committee recommended a slightly dif- ferent complex consisting mainly of a pool, a central activity -lounge area, locker rooms and three courts. The cost of the 17,000 square foot complex was estimated at $3.1 million. 4.1•,H E 5 IJ'AREi GODERICH 524-2822 Original concept suss urlx STORAGE-Y1r--t'- -'..'- J, y -J ,.1.- •.• ; WEIEEyt.tFOR ,y.MS101L1 1' i`. \ 11/ l w j ...1` \ 1 I r'1 POOL (QUIP-' Ft TER SAUNA r ,s 1 LEJSt1RE Q OL I IQU1P.\(f.NT \ 1 i-CyNPETIT WI S WH RLPOOL 1 SUPERVISION `' 1 • L1 417111.
