S lig-arts Little Bowl wins C` 1v sion unclogs meet Ideal in slow pitch A division final GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 1987—PAGE 9A New J© Deere AMT 600. It's almost :-_ - a truck 04 GMSL Report The Little Bowl slowpitch team, a once respected power in our league, fell onto hard tunes this year. At times, it seemed they could throw nothing but gutter balls and punch head pins. Things were not right as they dropped to C division and almost fell out of contention there. Near the end, they rallied, but no one gave them much of a chance against the up and coming Lakeview Rancher team. For years, I have asked team reps to sub- mit their own write-up to me. Here is Little Bowls "Championship" write-up, as sub- mitted by Larry Sloan. BY LARRY SLOAN Little Bowl can take some consolation for a below-average season with their two game sweep of the Lakeview Ranchers to win the 'C' division championship. After being last year's 'B' division ruiner -up; the Little Bowl team fell on hard -times •( or it is old age) this past season finishing first in the 'C' division over the regular season. After finishing third in the round-robin series the Little Bowlers eliminated the number two Chishohns team in two straight. games to face the youthful and undefeated Lakeview team. In the opening game played Sunday nite, they edged Lakeview 6 to 5 in an .extra inn- ing contest that was decided on a two -run home run by Jed DeJong in the top of the eighth inning. In the second and final game, Little Bowl took a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning before the Ranchers errupted for five runs and the lead. The Little Bowlers responded with seven runs in their half of the same in- ning to take an 8-5 lead. The teams battled with Lakeview scoring single runs in each of the fifth and ,sixth innings. Holding a slim 8-7 edge, Bwler Terry Schoemaker hit a two -out, three -run homer in the bot- tom of the sixth to seal the championship. The Little Bowl team would like to thank Brewster for his •infamous prognostica- tions. By picking Lakeview to win the 'C' championship, he did two things, first he put the' 'Hex' on the Lakeview team as favourites and second he gave the Little Bowl team some incentive to turn their - aeaspn around. 'Thanks Brewster, keep up the good. work! BY BREWSTER. Congratulations are also extended to Dearborn Steelers, 'B champs after sweep- ing their series with Parkhouse Raiders 3-1 and 45-1. After having an up and down season and only gaining a play-off berthon a run differential over Home Hardware, they knocked off the first place Chiefs in three. Team Rep Wayne Swan, says it was a real team effort, inspired by the perfor- mances of Dave Sleightholm, who hit 25 for 38 in their 12 play-off games and Thom Morris who belted 10 home runs in this same period. Other members on the team are Tom Willis, John Jamula, Gary McPhee, Rick Rawson, Ken Brownlee, Ron Whetstone, Don Thompson, Ray Bender, Keith Rondeau, Don Hunter, Jack Hopkins, Kevin Bender, Tom Jackson, Dennis Johnston and Kevin Shiels. In the A Division Semi -Final Round, Port Alpert bulldogs eliminated Chrysler in two straight while Ideal Supply defeated the Coyotes 18-8 and 31-13 after losing the first game 15-12. Ideal and Bulldogs were to start their final series Sunday after- noon, but were rained out. This is the last reminder of the fall meeting scheduled for Monday Oct. 5. Divisional Trophies, Presidents Trophy etc. should be returned at this meeting! See you there. Tune in next week for the final report of the year! Sailors split exhibition series vs wingham For Goderich Sailors' coach Kent Phibbs and his assistant Dick Madge, the Sailors exhibition games Friday and.Sunday with the Wingham Ironmen brought some en- couraging news. The teams split the game, the Sailors winning 5-4 here Friday and the Ironmen prevailing 5-0 on their home ice Sunday, but the Sailors' coach had a chance to evaluate the 25 players still left in camp. • • The good news was that among those 25 players, a considerable amount of talent resides. It will take some time to mould the team into a cohesive unit, but compared to last year's sparse turnout, things look good.• The' Sailors continued 'their exhibition series this week with a home and home series with Thedford, a junior "D" team, and Friday here at 8:30 p.m: They will play Mount Forest, a new team in the Junior "C" league. • The game here last Friday provided October JrC hockey schedule some entertaining hockey for the fans. The teams each scored once in the first period ' and were tied at 4-4 after two periods. Dar- rell Durnin's goal at 8:1.4 of 'the third period gave the Sailors their margin of vic- tory. Shawn Larder had two Goderich goals whle Dave Duncan and Curtis Mc - Cone scored the others. Veteran Ironman Dan Gilchrist had two of Wingham's goals and Steve Murray and Paul Tolton had one a piece. Sailors goalie Jeff Roy who placed the second half of the game was impressive. Sunday, in Wingham, the Sailors played with a different line-up and lacked scoring power, but did play well defensively for most of the game. Hot goaltending by Wingham's Murray Foxton rumoured to be on his way to a Junior "B" team also frustrated the Sailors. Paul': Tolton, Bevin Flett, Jamie Robin- son, Sandy MacDonald and Paul Brophy scored the Wingham goals.
