A group of Michigan antique car buffs from Michigan, known as
"Brass and Gas," brought a touch of nostalgia to this area as they
passed through Friday, while on a weekend tour of Ontario. In all,
vintage cars were parked outside the Benmiller in, while the
owners stopped for lunch there. Later, the group toured through
Goderich. (photos by Patrick Raftis
Good weather can mean North Pole has tilted
The flowers all over town are still
beautiful and most of them are hardy
enough to last through, the first snow. I used
to feel so proud them standing there with
heads above t at first snow which was
around the first of September. That was a
few years ago and now with the first of Oc-
tober on our door step is makes one zit up
and notice. Milder winters, longer fall, hot
summer, long spring ... what has happened?
Are we convinced it, is 'freaky. or are we
afraid droit the weather patterns are
changing . Let's not think about it now, we
need many more "nice" winters before we
admit the North Pole has tilted or it is off it's
moorings. • •
I was talking to a very nice old gentleman
not long ago. We agreed that most of the
flowers would last many more weeks if un-
disturbed. He patted the cement seat which
is usually occupied (we were at the
Woolworth's corner) and said, "Yes, and
they take these away to soon, too." He was
right, there are lots of sunny days to come.
But.once the bad days startit is pretty rough
slugging for the town boys, so we must just
hope they too are watching the weather and
, not the date. ..
Since I mentioned glass recycling last
week, I find many people are interested and
wondering how it can. be handled. It seems
to me the handling must start at home. Soft

garbage is one container, cans in another,
glass separated also. You can think of more
and bitter ways to do this I'll bet. I can't
recall hearing and I know I didn't read that
our new dollar coin is made up of many
things. How's that for a reason to recycle?
Our first money from recycling. But it all
boils fown to people doing the sorting. One
A&P plastic bag for soft garbage, Zehrs
plastic bag for cans. Can't you see them all
lined up in the kitchen? And there are lots of
plastic bags. We 'will have to have a plastic
bag for plastic too. Rey, this can get com-
plicated. But it can be done and the sooner
the better. ' Just think of people - or
whatever they are - hundreds of years from
now, ' digging ,down into what we call
"Earth"- and coming upon a thick layer of
plastic and glass. Plastic doesn't dissolve or
disintegrate and glass -well it will flow if it
gets hot enough. I'd hate to be able hear
what they would say about us.
Last' weekend my grandaughter and two
Middegaal
girl friends camped at Benmiller Camp
Grounds and loved it. Her friends wanted to
hike, - even brought the right kinds shoes -
so, Sharon and I went,."wandering." First I
had to show her our great row of beaches.
She was pleasantly surprised - no need now
to go further north from now on. The St.
'Christopher Cove was just right for
youngsters and she has two nice ones. Later
she took her friends down there and they
thought Goderich was great. They noticed
the great wall as they called it - hugging and
protecting the beaches. I too felt this "arm"
around the last beach and thank -our council
- or whoever - for getting the right people to
do a difficult job, right.
Another thing I'm sure you feel it too - the
people of Bayfield were right in not allowing
the takeover of the other side of the bridge
along their river. I'm glad we have good
neighbours who know what could happen to
their nice village.
Oops, Walt is getting up so no more time
for writing. He depends on me for almost
everything, especially when I tell him I see
and ,talk to old friends and young friends
who are now so doggone big and hiding
behind beards. I can't tell who they are
anymore. We loved them when they were
little and skating so hard to please
everyone. They were great and are now
helping others and this too is wonderful.
Have a good week.
Love, Martha
