Goderich man involved in sea rescue
Heroics were the last thing on Lance
Hamilton's mind when he charted a fishing
boat during a recent trip to the Florida
town of Hudson — but the Goderich resi-
dent became involved in a nautical rescue
none -the -less.
Hamilton had charted Captain Bill
Backes' Mimbi, for what he expected to be
an afternoon of fishing on Sept. 9. He was
the only passenger on the boat when the
skipper noticed a black cloud about 4.5
miles away, around 1:45 p.m.
"He said,`Bring in the lines, we've gotta
go,"' said Hamilton.
The captain radioed a "May Day,"
distress call to the Clearwater Coast
Guard station and headed for the burning
craft. It took about 15 minutes for the Mim-
bi to reach the Edward Kerstein's burning
cabin cruiser "Foolish Pleasure".
PEOPLE
"When we found him (Kerstein) he was
just sitting in a rubber dinghy and he had
something in his eyes," Hamilton said.
Kerstein had attempted to put the blaze
out with a fire extinguisher and the wind
had blown the chemical from the .ex-
tinguisher back into his eyes.
After they pulled him out of the water,
Hamilton doused Kerstein's stinging eyes
with water while the captain piloted them
to the Hudson Medical Centre, where he
was treated for eye injury and released.
Kerstein, said Hamlton, was relieved to
be spotted so quickly.
"We were about 12 miles from shore and
he was just drifting. He thought he was go-
ing to be out there for days," Hamilton
said, noting that they noticed the fire only
minutes before they were planning to head
back after fishing for about an hour.
Kerstein's boat eventually sank.
Hamilton was in Florida with his wife,
Carmen, and their 2 -year -old -son Marc,
visiting Carmen's parents Mr. and Mrs.
Yolande Niemie.c, of Hudson, Fla.
Ironically, the man Hamilton helped
rescueturned' out to live only four doors
down from the Niemiecs.
"It's a small world," Hamilton noted.
Even though the rescue was the major
excitement for the day, Hamilton also said
he had some luck while fishing, catching
about 75 Trout and Grouper fish.
Council decides on Bedford after debate
Goderich Town Council, after one of the
lengthier' debates of the evening, decided
to book the Bedford Hotel to cater to the
annual employees Christmas party, at
their Sept. 28 meeting.
The debate began when Deputy Reeve
John Doherty objected to an Administra-
tion and Personnel Committee recommen-
dation to accept the Bedford package of
$11.90 per person for dinner, instead of
Vahna Miller, who has catered 'the event
for number of years,. at $12.
Doherty said he could see no point in
changing from a caterer who had always
given good. service, "for the matter of sav-
ing 10 cents," and said he would ask for a
rrr.orded vote on the matter, although he
e .tually declined to make a formal mo-
tion to record the vote. .
Councillor Bill Clifford, chairman of the
Adminstratjon Committee,' pointed out
that saving the dime was not the main
issue in the committee's decision.
"Mrs. Miller has announced every year
— certainly for the last three years — that
this would be her last year," said Clifford.
"Also, we felt If other local purveyors
are competitive, we should spread the
business around," be added.
Council also debated the the merits of
holding he banquet, to be in the Communi-
ty Centre, on Nov. 21, the same day'as the
Santa Claus Parade. At onepoint in the
discussion, Councillor Jim Searls, noting
that the subject always evokes controver-
sy at council, suggested the party be
cancelled 'and ,the employees be given 'a
turkey instead. To this, Clifford replied

that a survey of department heads showed
the employees would prefer the party, to

The motion to book the Bedford was

to change the date of the party to Nov. 28
