You and your dog are in- vited to participate in the second annual National WaIk-A-Dog-A-Thon, a special fund raising event for Canine Vision Canada. C.V.C. is a national training facility for dog guides and visually -impaired Canadians, initiated & operated by Canadian Lions Foundation and is located in Oakville, Ontario. Goderich resident Alma MacEwan celebrated her 100th birthday Wednesday, September 23 with a family luncheon at the Bedford Hotel. Mrs. MacEwan, a resident at Maitland Manor, was born Sept. 23, 1887. She received plaques from the provincial and federal governments in celebration of her birthday. Goderich Mayor Eileen Palmer visited Mrs. MacEwan and a lovely bouquet of flowers was also. presented to her by the Town of Goderich. Mrs. MacEwan has two son -in-laws, Gordon McManus and Don Mason, both of Goderich, four grandchildren Mary Jayne ,(McManus) Paprocki of Waterloo, Bill 1V1cManus of Hanover, Peter McManus of Goderich and Paul Mason of Toronto, and six great-grandchildren. (photo by Lou -Ann DeBruyn) Goderich police arrest 5 in relation to break-ins Goderich Police have made five ar- rests after completing an extensive in- vestigation into a series of break-ins and thefts from residential garages in, town. Police have arrested four male adults and a young offender. One adult and the young offender were held in custody. A total of 25 criminal chares have been laid -against-the-group. - On September 14, the Maitland Golf and Country Club was broken into and Canine guide dogs. • are the answer for all visually -impaired people: "Some of them are extremely indepen- dent with a cane and think that a' dog would be a hassle, because you have to take care of it," she said. However, there are still any more blind persons desiring to have dogs, than can be matched up at the moment, she adds. Anderson's dog, Josh, is currently two - years -old ears -old and she hopes to have the animal for another eight to 10 years. WALK-A-DOG-A-THON Anderson will be among those helping to make the dream of .owning a guide dog possible for other visually -impaired Can- dians', when she participates in the local Lions Walk-A-Dog-A-Thon, on October 4, in Goderich. • Anyone wishing to participate can pick up sponsor sheets at any local bank, or from any Lions Club member. One common problem, experienced by guide dog owners, said Anderson, is the dogs' natural tendancy to fight with other animals. "When that happens, I quickly put him on a long leash (guide dog leashes are ad- justable) and let them fight • it out, because you have to remember that he is animal." Anderson said that obtaining a dog has allowed her, to put away the traditional blind persons' aid, the white cane. "If you relied on the cane, and the dog, I don't think you'd ever really rely on the dog. You have to learn to completely trust your dog," she points out. Despite their obvious advantages, Anderson doesn't believe that guide dogs Huron County Council will meet at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, in the Court House council chambers, Goderich. Huron Waste Managment Committee will meet at 1:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Oct. 6, in the Court House council chambers, Goderich. Huronview Committee of Management will meet at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8, at Huronview. CIVIC CORNER Goderich Town Council will meet on Monday, Oct. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the council chambers.
