Dave Cornish wins men's
championship at Maitland
The fact that it poured on Saturday mor-
ning, might have dampened the golfers
'physically, but it did not dampen their
spirits! A full complement ofboth ladies
and gentlemen turned out for Champion-
ship Day and the sun, absent from the mor-
ning flights, deigned to come out in the
afternoon and we finished the day in a
burst of beautiful autumn weather.
In the Men's Section Dave Cornish edged
out "Q" Egener for the Men's Champion-
ship. B flight was won by Jack Gould, with
Fred Looker runner-up. Mike Sully cap-
tured. C flight with John Empson a close
second.
In the Trophy Section, Bill Hanly won
out over Dave Almasi for the Papernick
Trophy. The two -ball match was taken by
Jack Hinton and Bob McDougall with Don
MacEwan and Jack Hoffmeyer as
runners-up. The Seniors trophy 'was won
by, Bill Hanly, while Fred Looker came in
a close second. The Ron Menzies Trophy
went to Jack Hinton, while Ralph Neville
took second spot. The Kane Trophy for the
most improved golfer was taken by that
reformed fisherman, Bill King.
Men's night champion was John Kane,
followed by Dave Cornish, Gerald Morgan
and John Empson, and John Empson also
set his second shot on No. 5 closest to the
hole.
The ladies' trophies have been played
for over the whole summer and the win-
ners were honoured Saturday. Bev Jeffrey
won out over Verna Kane in the Club
.hampionship, and Verna Kane took the
Rose Bowl, winning out over Jean Hanly.
Bev also won the Maitland Trophy with
Jean . Hanly a mere couple of strokes
behind. Those three names do keep cropp-
ing up. The Mrs. George Bruce Trophy for
the lady golfer who has reduced her handi
cap most during the season went to Joyce
Garrick, who brought her handicap down
8.7%. In the Two -Ball Tournament the
team of Maxine Martin and Lois McGill
won out over Verna Kane and Bertha
McGee.
For the day's play first flight was won by
Verna Kane, followed by Bev Jeffery and
Marie Huff. Joan McDougall took second

winner was Irla Stewart followed by Pat
Tyndall and Lois McGill. Marie Huff drop-
ped her ball closest to the pin on number
one, while the longest drive went to Joyce
Garrick.
The lucky person holding the winning
ticket on a set of golf clubs and bag was
Ralph Neville. A fitting way to close off the
season, Ralph.
Don't forget that so long as the weather
stays salubrious ( don't get to use that word
much) golfing will continue!
