MacKay Choristers ready for season
In the fall of 1982, 23 enthusiastic seniors
met for the. first time to, sing together under
the energetic leadership of Irla Stewart and
with Joan Henwood at the piano. As of June
1987, the numbers had swelled to 49, more
than doubling the original membership. At
that time, 10 charter members were still
singing with the Choristers and the leader
and the accompanist had remained the
same.
Therefore, it is with equal enthusiasm
that the MacKay Choristers will begin their
sixth season ion Thursday, October 1 at 9:30
a.m. in MacKay Centre for Seniors. If you
are 55 years or older, enjoy singing and the
camaraderie of wonderful people, then you
are invited to join this vital and ongoing
musical organization.
The director, with her unique ability to
pick music that perfectly suits this choir,
has chosen a Christmas musical fantasy
called Brother Heinrich by John Rutter, to
learn[ this year. Along with this will be tradi-
tional Christmas music and some lighter
popular songs. There is something here to
suit every musical taste.
During the fall session, the choir hopes to
sing with the Harbouraires and the
Laketown Band at the annual community
Christmas Concert, at the December pro-
gramme in MacKay Centre and to entertain
the residents of Huronview and Maitland
Manor. Tentative plans are also underway
for an exchange with the Rockway Gardens
Senior Citizens Glee Club in Kitchener.
' The MacKay Choristers won first place
for the second year in a row at the Senior
Citizens Choirfest '87 in Kitchener last June
and so in addition to the good fellowship ex-
perienced in the group there is also a feeling
of dedication to each other and our director.
You too can become part of this by attending
the opening rehearsal on Thursday, October
1 at 9:30 to 11 a.m. ft you wish any further
information, you may contact the director
Irla Stewart at 524-8741, the president Eileen
Harrison at 524-7922 or the secretary Shirley
McMillan at 524-7656.
