District News Ted Bowers, president of the Dungannon Senior Citizen's Centre, stands in front of their meeting hall. The centre has been in e xistence for six years and offers seniors in Dungannon and area a chance to socialize and pa rtake in various activities. The seniors meet Wednes- day nights for cards.(photo by Yvette Zandbergen) Dungannon senior Citizen Centre offers recreation • BY YVETTE ZANDBERGEN ' The Dungannon Senior Citizens Centre, in existence for six years, has grown from 15 to 105 members. President Ted Bowers said the centre bought the current meeting place, once the Fellowship Mennonites church, in March, 1984. Before 'this, the members met in Orangeman's Hall, the,. Agricultural Hall and Brookside School. "We had, a chance to buy this place and jumped at the chance," he said. "It took a lot of scrounging and running around- lint we have it free and clear." The mem)ers have completed many renovations over the past few years in- cluding tearing down the pews, putting on a new steel roof last -fall, covering the win- dows with Plexiglas to prevent them from getting broken, transferring the basement .into a kitchen, panelling the basement and laying new carpeting. Many things have been donated to the cent including a desk, a piano and a nine by 15 foot mural which depicts a park in the United States. - The first president of the centre was Evelyn Errington who was also the founder, and she kept the presidency for three months. Bowers took over shortly after this and describes his role as "a jack of all trades," with duties including taking charge of meetings and giving speeches at get-togethers. Members of the centre come from Dungannon, Goderich, Lucknow, Port Albert, Colborne and Ashfield townships. Wednesday night is card night for the seniors but this is just one of many ac- tivities. Bowers said the centre also holds two summer beef and pork barbeques, an annual Thanksgiving dinner on October 9th, a yearly Christmas dinner, bake sales and yard sales. The meeting place is also used for other events including playschool, beginning Oc- tober 7th, elections, wedding anniver- saries and dinners and bereavement dinners. To become a member, one must be at least 50 years old and be, willing to pay a $2 membership fee. Bowers said the centre. makes a difference to senior citizens. "Before this, they did not have a place to go in the evenings," he said. He added the centre is an ideal place for seniors to gather and socialize and it is something for '-the-elderly-person-to-look forwa.cd.tn...-.:. The centre's committee consists of President Ted Bowers; Past President Evelyn Errington; Treasurer Aileen Trommer; Secretary Margaret Err- ington; First Vice. Eldon Culbert and Se- cond Vice Harvey Culbert. The centre also has various committees that make up the organization: refreshment, membership, maintenance, ways and means, property trustees and business committees. The Dungannon Senior Citizens Centre is just one club out of 16 in zone eight, which encompasses Huron County. October 14th is the date for the fall rally, where all members from zone eight will meet in the Goderich Township Comrnuni- ty Centre in Holmesville.. According to Bowers, this is -the place where ideas are exchanged and the seniors get a chance to socialize and play cards and shuffle board. Last year's rally was held at the hall in Dungannon and Bowers said about 149 peo- ple were present. The rally takes place twice a year. Bowers said the only things the club lacks is "more room". and he is thinking of installing florescent lights to replace. the current lights. His ,future plans also in- clude the formation of a "drop in centre" where seniors can come into the centre in the afternoon to socialize but Bowers said there has been little interest.
