Fortunately, no one was injured when this tractor trailer,. driven by .
Gary Richmond, of Michigan skidded out of control after attemp-
ting to pass an unknown vehicle while travelling north on Highway
21 on the norther edge of Goderich. The truck came to a halt against
a guardrail on the bridge around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17.

was .taken. by the Huron County Board of
Education 1 HCBE i in quick order to' ensure
the safety of a five year old girl.

September 8 meeting to discuss the safety of

,G stretch of Highway 21. The board address -"-
ed the situation and later took action to pro-
vide a bus route that would deliver the
kinderg:;arten pupil to her farm gate.
-"We're quite pleased now," commented
Mrs.,Wain in a later telephone conversation
with the News -Record.
The Wains can breath a sigh of relief in
knowing that their young daughter is safely
delivered home, from Holrnesville Public
school.-
-
c•houl.- The HCBE action resolved a situation that
saw the, young girl being dropped off by the
school bus some .2 k from her home. From
there she walked from a sideroad corner
along, Highway 21 to her home: While a bus
picked her up at her farm gate in the morn-
ing, the same bus route was not available to
her at night.

speed road, it shouldn't be allowed," M'r.
• Wain told board.menibers when he met with
them. '
He noted that in order for his daughter to
reach home, she had to walk past a deep..gul-
ly. He suggested that she could face other
hazards including winter snowplows, being
picked up by strangers, encountering
highway accidents and high speed drivers...
_"A_five .yed-c-a-n't-dea1vith-ii'-t,eg lar-
. actions (like,those )," he stressed.
"All I want is Co get her back to the gate at
night," Mr. Wain emphasized in his plea to
'find alternate busing' for his, daughter. -
It was suggested by board member Tony
McQuail that bus- routes are .subject to
changes at the start of the school year to ac-
• conimodate special cases, and that the
HCBE management committee would look
at Mr- Wain's c -ase in detail.
Board member Joan Van Den Broeck sug-
gested that the, busing policy be reviewed in
its entirety to ensure that such a situation is
not happening elsewhere.
"There's•no parent here that would allow
their child to walk such a busy stretch of
road f as Highway 21)".
She said that since' the busing -policy was
developed in 1972, significant traffic in-
creases have been evidenced along major
highways,irt.the county.
"It's time to review the policy on busing,
particularly the farm gate pick up for early
elementary students," she noted.
The board agreed to look into this,
however Dr. John Goddard suggested that
immediate action should be, taken to resolve
the .Wain case, then the policy could be
reviewed at a later time.
Mr. Wain asked, "How long will this '
take."-`
Alan said, As quickly'as possible if
your ,icular case is dealt with. If the
whole policy is examined, it may take until
the next HCBE meeting in October."
Mr. Wain said he would give the board a
week to come up with a solution. After that,
he said he would go to the public to seek
their support.
"You try to teach children about road
safety at school, then you turn them out to'
the bears," he told board members.
In the meantime immediate action has
been taken to provide additional bus service
to ensure.that the Wain girl is delivered to
her farm gate each day after school. The...
management committee will further ad-
dress the situation this week in an effort to
make more permanent routing suggestions
and Co make recommendations regarding
the busing policy as a whole.
